and now i cant play. whats going on and how do i fix it?

I got that message today, but it didn't prevent me from playing the game. It just wasn't in my steam cloud.

I'd try right-clicking the game on your Steam Games menu and see if Verifying the files off the Properties menu does anything.

Try to disable the steam cloud through l4d or any of your other games.

Had this problem one time. Oddly, went into my ati control panel and turned on some HD resolution thing, saw the screen go black for 2-3 seconds, then came back. After that, steam started to work normally.
