I could of known what games my kid plays. It's parents' responsibility. If adult mentally healthy there is no game in this world affect him(her). So I think it's just another way to get some political points for the government in the end.

Evan, mate, you can't generalise like that. Myself being an adult gamer feel the frustration that many other Australian gamers feel, the fact that the ratings board wont put out an R rated classification is, to say the least just plain short sighted. As far as I can see there is no real reason why they wont change this law? The Australian government is quite happy to make new laws allowing them to "steal" water from on place to take it to the city, (oh thank you so much Ruddy for the North south pipeline, you Wanker) but they wont allow this. Shame on them. You shouldn't vote for politicians, it only encourages them...

I should make a comic about how only ever so slight differences in violence from one game to another results in a 'refused classification'.

Jimbojones: I plan on fronting up to my local member as soon as I'm able. The actions of this committee are so plainly arbitrary as to completely invalidate the arguable worth of function they've been assigned. It's a joke.

    @cabbage100

It's doubtful they've even heard of youtube. L4D2 must've appeared in their local newspaper.

as our numerous letters and email seem to end up in the governments bin can i just suggest ( this might be going a bit far) a protest at your local member of parliament or if your willing to go that extra mile ( i know i am) actually going to parliament?

Once again Australia proves to the world what archaic thinking and ideals our government has, how they must thank themselves everyday for keeping us safe against the threat that videogames represent. They seem to have no problem whatsoever cramming american crime shows down our throat every night of the week on free to air television that has some of the worst stuff that 'actual' society has to offer yet feel that we need to be protected from the hacking off a limb or two in the context of a game. Thanks to Valve for making a game we Australians are obviously are too immature to play, oops....have to be carefull......the government has eyes and ears everywhere......hey ....who's that at the door....its....AHHHHHHHHH

    @ SgtDeathrax -

While i agree with some of the reasons behind your rant, things like "I bet the Board of censorship is made up of a bunch of old farts and churchies that think they know best.." are good blocks of text that show you probably don't have the maturity to argue gamers' cases to anyone, let alone anyone remotely close to the government. @ Cyn -

Well said. Honestly, i think it's getting to the point where they don't KNOW what to refuse and what not to. It's almost a guess. Plus quite frankly i don't think they care anyway. It all seems rather ridiculous, for two specific reasons - A) These kind of decisions are neither helpful to the Australian people, nor do they have any major effect apart from removing that business from Australian shores, and B) The government shouldn't have the right to make that decision in the first place. I'm sorry but i cannot ever agree with someone telling me as an adult, what games i can or cannot play - provided they don't incorporate anything like child pornography etc. The Australian Government needs to grow up.

Oh yeah, also, if it's not coming out here, or if we end up getting a damn watered-down version, then Aussie gamers are simply going to end up resorting to game piracy, which I really don't like seeing as all that does is take away profits from an industry that really needs it and it discourages progress for our industry.

@Cyn987654 you're absolutely right, my friend. The Aussie Board 'o' Classification is too far out of touch with society to even give a damn and as far as I've seen, the only people on the board are 50+ old, grumpy (looking) men who are apparently given the right to choose what we can and cannot comprehend how they are able to play through all of these games and give a competent, level-headed decision. THey look like they'd probably just look it up on youtube, have a grumpy old mumble to themselves and slam their big red 'BANNED' stamp down on a copy of the game box and send it back to Valve.
You obviously know what's going on man, if your interested I uploaded a little rant onto my Deviatart page, I'm captaincabbage there.

I'm further confused, because games such as Fallout 3 feature combat of a far more 'impactful' nature. That title in particular has very detailed dismemberment (eyes, pieces of jaw and skull flying freely about the place in close-up and in slow-motion) yet the only thing that almost stopped it being available in Australia was the use of the word 'morphine.' L4D2 is far tamer, and yet this has occurred. I am utterly baffled.

Furthermore, if what I've read in the international press is any indication, this decision - and indeed the very nature of the classification board - is serving only to deny income to this country in the midst of the global financial crisis, and is promoting us as little more than a nanny state... a backwater. Do we want this?

L4D2 has been highly anticipated and was set to be a big earner for Australian businesses. This money will no longer be coming in, and a lot of it will quite possibly be going offshore. It will also lead many users to simply source illegal copies.

So why has one been refused classification while the other got through without a hitch?

I sent a letter to the Board as well. It read as follows:

I'm writing to inquire as the effective banning of PC and 360 title Left 4 Dead 2 in Australia, given its predecessor - Left 4 Dead - was available at retail without issue. This is doubly confusing as the premise and execution of both games are similar, if not identical, in most respects: 1). The antagonists in both titles are 'infected'.
2). Both games have comparable if not identical combat traits. (L4D2 does feature melee, but I'm unclear how a blow with a guitar, frying pan or even an axe differs from a point-blank attack with a shotgun. Especially given 90% of the combat occurs at close range.)
3). Both games result in bodies littered about the environment.
    4). Both games feature dismemberment.
5). Both games use the same technology, the same engine, and similar if not identical graphical assets.
6). Social and non-combat game mechanics are identical.
    7). Backstory is identical.

It's not the Australian people that got the game banned. It's those half witted classification board which consist of a small group of Church'es old farts and so called do-gooders along with that retarded prime minister of ours ( Kevin Rudd). The Australian people love L4D and will love L4D2. But the Government think we are stupid so they have to make the decision for us.. I sent this to those retards at the censorshipboard enquiries@classification.gov.au This is an outrages act of power play and a direct attack on people civil liberties and not to mention -it's a game.. The infected humans are in fact zombies. ( A zombie is a creature that appears in folklore and popular culture typically as a reanimated corpse or a mindless human being.) MINDLESS HUMAN BEING!!! There is no difference from the first Left 4 Dead and yet you ban number 2... Why don't you put an R rating on it then? But you won't! Cause our good Churchy of a government is trying to flex it's muscle and making the choice for us ..They think were are stupid ....Why don t we ban religion instead? It causes more wars and upheavals in the world than Left 4 dead 2. I bet the Board of censorship is made up of a bunch of old farts and churchies that think they know best.. I'm appalled to see my country fall into this type of dictatorship .. Shame on you censorship board..

    So take that Censorship board.!!

The grenade launcher looks a bit easy to kill special infected... I really hope that versus mode is easier in zombies favor in L4D2. it was just a bit too easy for survivors in the first L4d

As far as the classification board goes, I am sorry to say that I'm living in SA, and so would love to see the ass end of Michael Atkinson.

I wish piracy was an option in this case because I'd be all over it, frankly. This is outrageous. But as a Steam-native product, the functionality of the thing is tied to your country of residence. Meaning if Australia says no, Australians don't play. It's f***ing ridiculous. It makes no sense and is, frankly, goddamned insulting. We look like a friggin' backwater.
