I must admit up front to being wholly and completely biased by my adoration of the movie upon which this game was based. Krull was one of the formative experiences of my young life, and as such, I am ill-equipped to provide an objective review.

Fortunately, the odds of anyone (a) viewing this page, (b) reading this review, and (c) using it to inform their purchasing decision are spectacularly slim, so I will feel free to gush as much as I darn well please.

Krull puts the player in the role of Prince Colwyn, whose bride, Princess Lyssa is kidnapped during their wedding ceremony by the Slayers employed by a hideous beast. Colwyn must travel across the country, braving countless horrors, culminating in a showdown with the Beast using the Glaive, a mythical weapon of immense power.

At least in theory. Actually, Colwyn (who I will henceforth refer to as stick figure A) doesn't do much fighting. He initially fights some slayers, but there is no way to prevent them from kidnapping the princess, so the incentive is not really there to try hard. Encounters with a vicious spider later in the game are equally unsatisfying, as the only objective is to get the heck out of the spider web before stick figure A is eaten. The showdown with the Beast, however, is quite satisfying, taking the form of a sort of cross between breakout and soccer, attempting to chip away at a wall past the Beast, who serves as a sort of evil goalie. Once that is accomplished, Colwyn receives the gift of fire from his bride, and is able to defeat the Beast once and for all.

The game provides only about 20 minutes of entertainment at a stretch, but what a 20 minutes they are!! At the age of 8, the replay value was immense. At the age of 28, I find that it is all I can do to play the game once.

Still, the movie is fantastic! Go see it right now!
