Behold! Perhaps the only Third Person Hummingbird Shooter Game out there, Kolibri will hook you in!

I first stumbled upon Kolibri in a stack of old cartridges I acquired from both my brother and cousin, both of whom decided to give me both of their Genesis/32X/CD combo and collection of games.

After learning that this particular one belonged to my brother, and my mom had told me how he would spend hours as a little kid making Kolibri fly around in a a beautiful field, I figured that this was worth a look, considering 32X was known for brighter graphics than it's predecessor, the ever hardy Genesis.

Boy, was I in for a surprise.

Like most of the games in the clutch of cartridges (enough, might I add, that a single afternoon is not enough to play around with all of them.), this one was void of a box and a manual, leaving me to simply play with the controls to get the feel of how to move Kolibri.

Some point in, a cutscene was activated and I was launched into the real game, which meant that I had been in the training field for quite some time. When I realized the hummingbird could actually SHOOT projectiles at enemies, and collect powerups... the real fun began.

I'm not sure what the real story for the game was, but I can only guess that Kolibri is the hero of his species and is trying to rid the flowers of terrible bees that stop his fellow hummingbirds from feeding on the nectar. The bees must be evil, because the flowers lose color under their control.

Among that, you must also fend off spiders, ticks, scorpions and other insects and bugs that want you dead. The levels only end when each cluster of flowers is saved and the dangers are dealt with.

The game is difficult at times, and sometimes things happen too easily. For those not familiar with the controls, it takes some time to adjust, but will soon become as easy to remember as any other game.

The music is nice as well, and it's upbeat but calm turn helps keep your focus as you search for powerups, shoot bees, or just fool around and explore the level before you decide to move on.

If you ever find that you have this game in your collection, it's worth a look and might be one of the best of the 32X games. The sprite work it took to put together what we see is impressive and true to life.
