Kirby's Magnum Opus

User Rating: 10 | Hoshi no Kirby Super Deluxe SNES
Among the Kirby games, Kirby Super Star stands as the strongest, and it makes sense, it's the one on the Super Nintendo! While its premise seems a little gimmicky, 'Eight Games in One!' pans out very well. Snappy, and fun gameplay, increasing difficulty, and some of the best environments in a Kirby game make this a blast!

All the classic elements of Kirby gameplay are here. The selection of abilities is about as large as always, but this time, unlike Kirby 64, or Adventure, abilities provide a varied moveset like a fighting game. Not all the abilities are like this, but most do, and some take some real skill to master, such as Ninja.

The difficulty has one of the nicest curves I've seen in a game. The first two adventures are easy, typical fare for a Kirby game, but they quickly rack up from there. The Great Cave Offensive has a bunch of collectibles that require some creativity, and provides a nice moderate experience.

From then on though, the game gets insanely good. Meta Knights Revenge is almost orgasmic, as you smash your way through the Halberd to some of the best music in the game, to face Meta Knight as an almost duel-like boss before escaping while he destroys his own ship. The experience is hard to describe, but it is very good.

Then comes the two major variations in the games, Milky Way Wishes is basically a freeform experience where you go from world-to-world in whatever order you wish. As well, you just choose your abilities from those you've found, instead of inhaling enemies. The second is the Arena, where you fight a series of bosses with limited recovery items. If you've played Brawl, it's just like the Boss Battles mode there.

Music-wise, this is the quintessential Kirby game. While Kirby's Epic Yarn recently provided cute-tastic remixes of most of these tunes, Kirby Super Star was where all the great songs first really were collected together. Just listen to some of the tracks on Youtube and you'll see what I mean.

All-in-all, Kirby Super Star is the perfect little package for a Kirby fan. Gameplay, music, a difficulty that's just right, it's the best it could be! Just be wary of that Marx. I hear he's a scary fellow...
