Kirby Superstar Ultra remakes a good game, but the new additions are lacking and if you've played the original, skip it

User Rating: 7.5 | Kirby Super Star Ultra DS
Please note that when I review a remake, I base it mostly on the new additions. If I wanted to talk about the great things from the original, I'd review Kirby Superstar.

Now then, Kirby Superstar Ultra remakes one of the best Kirby games out there. Now I'll quickly recap what made Superstar so great. In Superstar you could take abilities and turn them into "helpers" that would be your ally. It was very cool and a fun new twist. Not only that, but it was co-op, making it the first Kirby game to have co-op. Another thing that made it great was the addition of instead of having separate worlds on one huge quest, having many different small quests. Each had their differences and some were better then others and overall, the game was a wonderful new twist for the series.

That being said I really wish this game was ported to the Virtual Console instead of being remade for the DS. What do you get for the 22 extra dollars you're paying?

Well for one thing, it doesn't suit the DS. The touch screen and 2 screens aren't really used much here and if it was on the Game Boy, you'd hardly notice a difference. However, I did like how it was used during the Metaknightmare Ultra mode and I hope to see more like it, but really, I don't think it would make much of a difference if it was on the Virtual Console or Game Boy.

Now, did Nintendo change anything? Well, they didn't really change anything in the original at all which I love other then the CGI scenes. One thing I did notice was that a few songs were changed (particularly Nova).

Now, what new modes does this game have? Well, this game has 3 new minigames that all use the touch screen (They're pretty fun, just as good as the originals) and 4 brand new, modes that you'll be uneasy with. Two of them are simply the Arena but one was made harder and in the other you play as a helper instead of Kirby, so psh, that's dumb. It's really something only for the hardcore players that want a challenge.

One new mode is Revenge of the King. Now, I actually really liked this mode and it's my favorite out of the 3. It's basically Spring Breeze, but it's been made longer and harder. IT was actually fun because it was long, challenging, and it was cool to refight all the bosses and enemies, and to see the new techniques they had and what happened to their old ones.

The final new mode is Metaknightmare Ultra, which I am iffy with. In the game, you play as Metaknight and every time you kill an enemy you gain Magic Points which you can use on one of 4 magic attacks. This is pretty cool, however the mode is really easy and you'll rarely find yourself using an attack and will constantly have max magic points, one thing I didn't like. Another thing I disliked, was that there are no new levels. You basically replay 5 of the game modes you did with Kirby as Metaknight. The story is changed a bit, but towards the end I had to force myself to finish the mode because it got boring playing the same levels again.

Really though, the one thing I hate, was that the co-op was killed. In a Nintendo Power magazine, it was said this game would have single-pack co-op. While it does, you can only play 1 mode and the 2nd player has to look at the first players screen. -_- Honestly, I don't even see why it is in, I don't want to have 2 people looking at 1 screen, and the co-op mode which I loved so much about the original Superstar was killed in this game.

Bottom line, if you haven't played the original, buy this! Kirby Superstar is an instant classic and remains one of the greatest Kirby/SNES games. However if you own this game, pass on it. The new modes are all copies of old ones and the co-op mode was killed. What this game has though is that the original was hardly changed and it's still as great as ever. Honestly, I wish this game came out on the Virtual Console because for 22 more dollars I got copies of new modes and the DS was not used much at all, but I didn't play the original much so I enjoyed this game.
