Kirby 64 might be easy, but it really does grow on you.

Kirby 64 is Kirby's first and only adventure on the Nintendo 64. Now it's available on the Virtual Console for 1000 Wii Points.

The story is about a fairy named Ribbon who came to Kirby's planet to find a crystal. She soon finds out that has been broken up into 74 shards, and Kirby decides to help her. As they travel through the lands, they'll meet up with friends and enemies, which have been possessed by the dark matter attached to the crystal. As they beat the dark matter, these guys decide to follow Kirby. Kirby games won't be known for deep stories, but this game wasn't that bad. They did a great job telling the story through the cutscenes, which were fun to watch.

If you've never played a Kirby game before, you play as a pink marshmellow, who has the ability to suck up his enemies and gain their powers. In this game though, you can actually mix and match up powers. There are plenty of combinations you can make. Sometimes you can make something that's really powerful, and sometimes you can make something extremely worthless. I liked this concept, since I was always experimenting with different powers.

The graphics looked fine for a Nintendo 64. Everything was detailed and colorful. After all, it's a Kirby game, and it's supposed to be like that.

The controls were great with a Classic Controller. I did find the buttons hard to get used to, since there was a lot to use. You use the Control Stick to move, A to jump, B to suck up enemies, X to lose your power, X again to throw it vertical, and B again to throw it in front of you.

The game has an interesting mix of 3D and 2D. You're in a 3D world but the camera stays fixed on where it wants you to go, and you're on rails. So it turns this 3D world into a 2D sidescroller.

In the levels, there are Crystal Shards that you have to find. There are three in each level. Sometimes they are hidden, and sometimes they are out in plain sight, but getting to them is hard. There is also one Crystal Shard during a boss fight, which you get after you beat it.

As I mentioned before, there is a boss at the end of each world. The bosses involved you finding a weak spot, then exploiting it.

There are also minigames that you can play with your friends, and they were very fun to play.

THE VERDICT!

Kirby 64 is a fun game. The power combo system made it really fun. Sure, it may be really easy, but it still grows on you. I found that out as I was playing it. Download it now.
