The beginning of the trailer looks exactly as prologue from Planescape Torment. Guess the developers were lacking a bit of creativity. Dissapointing for such a high budget game ...

@punksterdaddy If you put a question mark at the end of your sentences that aren't questions?  It makes it confusing?  That is what they make periods for?

Perhaps, one day, Nintendo will release a Legend of Zelda game in this manner of gameplay: a game which fosters a sense of maturity, but retains a story and environment blooming with color.

I will add that there are moments of shear pleasure in this game. The buttery smooth and very solid mechanics can make for luxurious questing --much like delicious, if one dimensional vanilla milkshake. However extended play sessions can feel grindy and monotonous.

Just finished this game, put about 40hrs into it. I agree with the review. The combat is great, however the game gets repetitive. The standard difficulty is too easy and if you play on hard be prepared to fight some seriously spongy enemies. For the most part playing on hard means occasionally taking a health potion during battle and more often than not, pounding away on enemies that, though not a serious threat to your life, take a serious amount of punishment to kill. This saps some fun from the game, though by no means eliminates it completely. And because the story, world, and characters are so bland this combat grind is the main course here. If you enjoy soloing MMOs and the idea of God of War style combat seems appealing this game is probably for you.

I'm about halfway through the game, and this review really nails it.

Great review, the game had so much potential if only it had a little more focus on storytelling.

Its a shame Big Huge games got into so much trouble, lets hope that the team is able to keep up the good work and deliver a game that is this fun with all the mentioned flaws wherever they may end.

@tone414  @bustalyme If you are looking for relaxing game, you can play this. Not good story line but its not so bad, the combat system is good, so much fun. But Witcher 2 is better than this

I loved this game when i played it after spending 150 hours with Skyrim....and I loved it.  Then I tried to do another play through after spending 100 hours with Dragon's Dogma..couldn't do it!  Combat in DD feels more fluid with a greater range of motion. :(

@3rdangel If you're a big RPG gamer, you can't ignore this game. The story isn't fantastic but it gets the job done pretty well.

This is a seriously addictive game.  It should have had a higher rating and romantic interests.  I'm looking for games with adult situations which would make the game more interesting.  However, the combat system is great.  Highly recommend it.

@Humorguy_basic Games aren't called "action-rpg" just because they have combat, obviously. All of these games have combat systems. It's the "style" of said system that makes the difference. "Action-RPGs" are, at heart, action-based. You actively swing a melee weapon or shoot a missile one in real time, while moving, dodging, etc. From Diablo to Elder Scrolls, and now, apparently, Kingdoms of Amalur are examples of these, and they tend to be the most popular nowadays. Regular "RPGs" (or sometimes called "traditional" or "pure RPG") follow the original method that was born back when Dungeons & Dragons was popular, like, turn-based combat, full character creation (as opposed to pre-generated characters), and ability to go solo or in a party when tackling any quest. The original Fallout or Baldur's Gate are good examples of these. "Strategy-RPGs" are pure turn-based combat, with most of the other RPG elements thrown out the window. Characters are usually pre-generated, and the story develops with hardly any input from the player (so, mostly cutscenes, and the occasional multiple path choice). Final Fantasy Tactics, Fire Emblem or Record of Agarest War come to mind. Hope that helps.

Humorguy_basic
Humorguy_basic

@Star_Gem  @Humorguy_basic I would say it's a lot simpler/ In the 90's most RPG's weee turned-based. Like Final Fantasy, for example. Console gamers couldn't have PC games being called the same as their beloved RPG;s, so they decided calling their turn-based combat RPG's "RPG's" and real time combat RPG's, that were only on PC, not console in the 90's, were now called "Action-RPG's. This grew and grew until even games with very very little RPG elements, like Jade Empire and Borderlands were called "Action-RPG's". Now we have a situation where a full-on cRPG, like Morrowind is, Skyrim, Amalur, Fallout 3 is in the same "Action-RPG" genre as Bioshock, Mass Effect  GTA IV and other "Action-Adventure" games. I call them this, as they are closer to Tomb Raider than Morrowind!

I agree that the story and side quests were rather poor, but the combat kept me going.

Gamespot wtf is wrong with your reviews? You used to be the best site for reviewing games, but now your just too harsh on all the games. You jugde the games based on hype and popularity(take CoD for example). This is a great game that should easily get the same score as skyrim. Sure skyrim has better graphics than Reckoning, but Skyrim's gameplay quickly gets boring as hell.

@Warningx13 indeed the game had many strong points, nice combat and really satisfying quests were part of it,but the game had also 2 main negatives...the first one is the bad to decent graphics, which personally its the last thing i care, but some people give a huge basis on that and second was the repeatitive encounters you had in the game as far as monsters are concerned which really made me feel uninterested....You travel from woods,to deserts, lakes and mountains yet every area has almost the same monsters with just upgraded stats...it felt really lame for me at least

Sounds amazing to me even with the review sounding not so hot, but its strong points really call to me so I'm gonna have to get this for sure.

8.2/10 for me. I'm 30 hours in and the pluses for me are the fantastic and grand feel of the environment, interesting and rich art style, and combat. I am also enjoying the story, love the stealth element, and very much enjoy the character development. 90% of the side quests are redundant (the other 10% are quite interesting), however, so that's a minus (though still great and mindless fun), and I have the difficulty ramped up to hard because combat was getting too easy on normal. All in all exactly what I was looking for in a game. Something I could play for a couple hours and provided simple fun and entertainment without becoming way too addicting. I need to have a life after all, not like what Dark Souls did to me!

Terrible review. I just finished the game and can say I enjoyed everything about it. Doing quests, faction quests and the main story line. All the locations and art design look stunning. Also the combat system makes you feel like an actual warrior

For the first time in my life, I am disagreeing with gamespot's review and agreeing with IGNS. 7.5, really?! This game deserves AT LEAST a 8.0..

@Shahnil "Jesus I never understand Game spots ratings and pretty much just given up. The review Sounds nothing like the actual rating given." I'll try and help you understand. Unlike IGN and other like minded game reviewers the score system is more balanced. So the ratings don't equate to: 10=Great 9=Good 8 and below=poor. Instead it utilises the full spectrum of numbers available so it's more like: 9=Amazing 8=Great 7=Good And so on. So as we can see this review is very good but not quite great, a fair description of the game. If all games get the same score 9+ then numeric scoring becomes insignificant. Try not to get upset if scores don't match your personal expectations, and don't rely too heavily on subjective opinions.

One of the best RPG's ever in my opinion. It can easily compete with Skyrim in my books!

svenjl

Furthermore, I would suggest Kevin has been a bit harsh in his judgement of this game, specially his "vanilla" comments and quest related negativity. I think the game has a distinct look and "feel", and the quests aren't any more generic than Skyrim or any other RPG on the market. Add to that the fact that this game is practically bug free, freeze free, and runs super smooth during combat - so why the 7.5??? Not a bad score mind you, but 8.5-9 is closer to reality for me.
