Square and Disney join forces again... Who knew Mickey & Cloud could mix?

User Rating: 9.2 | Kingdom Hearts II PS2
The third in the great Kingdom Hearts series (ignore the title), Kingdom Hearts II is an emotional rollercoaster, but the gameplay is too button-mashy. I love this game. I LOVE it. It's probably my third favourite game (behind Final Fantasy VII and Sonic 2), despite its shortcomings.

As you start a new game, you watch an amazing FMV opening sequence, ending with a blonde kid waking up in bed. This is Roxas, and you play as him for a lengthy 3-hour gameplay introduction. This is far too long for telling you how to pound on the X button. But this is me in 'harsh reviewer' mode, as it is actually necessary to teach the story for series newcomers and introduce the new enemies, the Nobodies, controlled by the mysterious Organization XIII, whose leader looks strangely familiar...

Soon, you take control of series hero Sora, and the action begins.
You are aided by Donald Duck and Goofy (who is like, a genius, by the way), and along the way of your heroic crusade to save your friends and the worlds, you visit locales from Disney movies, see cameos from the Final Fantasy series, and watch Mickey Mouse unleash steely justice on the bad guys. Yes, Mickey Mouse turned badass. What of it?

The graphics are superb for the aging PS2, and the FMV sequences are jaw-dropping. The music is great and atmospheric, and, in a startling rarity, the VAs aren't crap! It's a miracle!

So go, play this marvellous game and come out of your room smiling. Oh, and unlock the secret ending.
