One of the greatest fighters ever. Why haven't we seen a new installment in so many years?

In the mid 1990's, every fighting game had to have something that set it apart from the crowd. Killer Instinct did that very well in a few ways.

In stead of the standard best 2 out of 3 rounds that most fighting games stuck to, Killer Instinct had a different plan. You goal was to beplete your enemy's health bar twice, regardless of how long it took. No time was added to the clock after the bar emptied, and no health was returned to the winner.

Also interesting was he amount of focus put on combos. Combos could co up to twenty hits at times, sometimes even higher. Every character had a move they can use to break out of them aswell, to prevent 1 combo from killing you. Finishing moves known as Danger Moves are here. They work in a similar way to the Fatalities in Mortal Kombat. You can also knock you opponent off building tops in some stages, and watch them fall to the ground.

Mix all this together with an interesting cast of characters, a great story and graphics, and you have 1 great fighting game.

The characters in Killer Instinct are done the same way as in Mortal Kombat. Digitised people recorded all the moves, and they were out in the game. The result is cahracters that look good, but are a little bit choppy. The backgrounds are great looking. They all have a great sense of realism to them.

The sound is about what you would expect from an SNES game. There aren't all that many cound effects, but the music, which is unique to each stage, fits perfectly. There is also an announcer who informs you when some one ha spulled off a great combo, or when some one has performed a combo breaker.

It's hard to say how Killer Instinc tcan be improved. It's great in every sense of the word. In an era when fighting games were all too common, it did a great job of setting its self apart from the pack.
