Beta Impressions: Mario Kart meets the internet.

User Rating: 9 | KartRider PC
I played this game a few months back when it was in closed beta, it's going into open beta on October 1st, 2007.

This game is basically set up like most other "create game" online games you'll find these days. You have a lobby, where you choose your class, then you move onto a list of player made games for up to 6 or 8 players (Minds a bit rusty on this, don't hold me to it). Once everyone's ready and the game owner has selected the track, the game is launched.

When you start for the first time, you're given a few licenses to get before you have full access to the game, these are very simple tests, but later advanced licenses will be much more difficult.

The best part about this game is that it has 2 modes, a speed mode, where users will drift or snake for boost and an item mode where players will battle around the track in classic mario kart style. It's perfect, because I persoanally don't like snaking (I'm no good at it.).

In the beta there were around 5 Karts to choose from, these were all low level of course. There will be a load of other karts in the full game and other customisations, such as number plates, spraypaints and so on.

There were 4 course styles too; Desert, Forest, City and Arctic. Courses have a star rating and get complex. Actually, if you browse youtube for videos of the korean game, you can see point to point tracks that take around 20mins to complete, they're huge.

Weapons in item mode include; Bugs, which home in on your enemy and place them in bubbles (?), homing rockets, bananas, UFOs which slow down the enemy, magnets which rubberband you around an enemy, boosters and so on.

Levelling up was a grind, however. I only ever got to level 2 in all the games I played. Kind of disappointing, but I guess it makes up for it with how fun the game is. This game is looking promising, it's definatly a good mario kart alternative.
