He got fired because Eidos probably payed to get him fired. This is just as honest a review as it can get. Good job Jeff!

Gamespot.com is one of the most popular gaming sites on the web, offering a large database of information on pretty much every game ever made. Gamespot's reviews, in spite of the whining of some fans, have been consistently tough on even big games.

On November 13th of 2007, Jeff Gerstmann of Gamespot released this review for Kane and Lynch: Dead Men. The review received a score of 6.0, or "fair" from the reviewer. Unfortunately for Jeff, the publishers of the game had recently purchased a great deal of advertising on Gamespot, creating the awkward situation where ads were splashed all around the review--the review of the game that the writer specifically told readers not to buy.

Gerstmann was immediately fired.

So what's the problem?Of particular note is the fact that, in spite of being fired, the review score for the game is still quite a bit higher than the average user review scores on Gamespot. In other words: Gerstmann gave a very generous review for a terrible game, but was nonetheless fired for not lying his ass off.

@LikaLaruku Hopefuilly  the words get spread out,b i only know this for just a view days. I'm almost never visiting this site anymore.

@LikaLaruku More surprisingly...Resident Evil 6 had ads all over the site as well and received a 4/10. Nobody got fired.I am really wondering if there isn't more behind this Kane and Lynch review. I don't want to believe that this happened because of a 6/10 and a professional review.

I'm pissed he got fired for this because he was just giving his opinion and overall from what i saw from this review is that the game looks terrible

Cant believe he got fired over this review ?!

colibriosis
colibriosis

@Export Why? He's so damn negative about it, bashing the hell out of it, don't understand how he didn't give it a 1/10 and I can fully understand why he got fired for this if he did.

@colibriosis I totally agree with you, i think the game is not the worst but he was too negative. He mentions 3 times how dull and uninteresting the plot and characters are, wich is true and makes him a honest reviewer but he should have known better... Gamespot is all about money not honesty, so that's why he got fired.

The most honest, and therefore IMHO, the best review on GameSpot to date.

Something with this many flaws should be more like a 4 or 5 right?

@darkcomedian I just dusted off my ancient GS account ... felt nostalgic and had to revisit this vid.

In hindsight, this review, and subsequent firing, was a blessing.

I was dumbfounded that Io Interative put Hitman on hold to make something so ridiculously inferior as this. And its sequel.

It took a crap game, bully tactics, and a spineless company to give us Giantbomb.

Such a shame that a honest reviewer gets sent away. Kind of makes you think if it is a free to choose score system or a corporate run sales booster through ratings...

I rented this game and played the co-op campaign. Honestly, this review is fair and honest. The score is pretty spot on too. It's not great, but it is also slightly average/above average. I had fun playing it.

the review that took down Gerstmann and gave me Giant Bomb, though I feel sorry for Jeff you can't deny this made the gaming world a better place

Jeff was the second best reviewer Gamespot had, after the legendary Greg Kasavin. Hard to believe it's been 4 years since he was fired from Gamespot. To the newcomers here; read up about Jeff Gerstmann.

I love how this site says game advertisers don't influence their review scores then they go and fire Jeff. He was spot on and brutally honest.

Screw yall involved in firing this guy, he makes so much sense in his reviews and explains in such a constructive and informative way. Giving this POS a rating of 6 was too generous.

Lol Jeff dident deserve to be fired i actually think Jeff was being generous giving it a 6/10 have you seen that horrible game...

Sheesh, not only did they fire Jeff, but their forums are filled with drama. Then again, all mainstream gaming sites have drama, even Giant Bomb...

I think a lot of people are missing the point. The controls on this game were fn awful - 6/10 is generous! that is a #FACT

Jeff was one of the most brilliant reviewers of GS. When I look at this review I knew it was too harsh for a 6.0/10 but...firing him was unreasonable. Worst yet, firing Jeff caused a chain reaction that took away all the previous GS reviewers who had unique and charming personalities, such as Alex, Brad, Ryan and many more...these people write and do reviews in ways that makes them actually "fun" to read/watch
