Intro:
Quality superhero games are not exactly the easiest thing to find. Often developers get lazy on the story and just use a good license, but ruin all its potential. Luckily Justice League Heroes is definetely different, but with competitors for the platform like Marvel Ultimate Alliance and Xmen Legends, is it really worth it.
Story:
You play as 7 main very popular Justice League characters, Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, The Flash, Martian Manhunter, Zatanna and Wonder Woman. There are also unlockable characters such as Green Lantern Hal Jordan and Kyle Rayner and Hawkgirl. The characters chosen should all be sort of familiar especially if you ever watched Justice League Unlimited. The characters are all unique and have strengths and weaknesses, but I'll get to that later. The story starts off with the player being Superman and Batman. You basically fight a bunch of robots that have gone crazy, thanks to no other then Braniac. You'll go from many different locations and play as many different characters. The story works and if your a Justice League Unlmited fan you won't be dissapointed. It is a basic plot, but it keeps you playing.
Gameplay:
The gameplay is fun, and has full of options. The combat though is a little slow, and I would've liked more combo's and more character moves, but it still works. Unfournately you can't switch on the fly for every level in the game, and often are forced to play as certain characters. This isn't a huge setback, but it would ne nice to play as my facorite characters all the time. The great thing about the gameplay though is the character special moves and super powers. These super powers are all different for each character, Batman will have his batarangs, while Superman will have heat vision and many other things. Each character starts out with three abilities and can have up to five. The RPG upgrading system works well, and it allows players to customize there players to how they want them. Also you can pick up things called boosts. These boosts can upgrade certain attacks and can help your character. If you equipt Superman's combat skills with more speed, he will do more damage per second. The main boosts are, speed (giving your character more damage per second), damage (more damage for an attack), efficiency (makes special moves use less energy), and range (more range for attacks). These boosts work well and you can combine these boosts together. The gameplay is a bit slow, but it works and is fun especially the RPG elements.
Controls:
The controls are straight forward and easy. X as light attack, O as heavy attack, square to pick up objects and hack, triangle to jump (press it twice to double jump, fly or glide), and L1 to bring up you special attacks. The controls work very well, and I had no problems.
Graphics:
The graphics look great for a PS2 game. It definetely uses the hardware and there is a good amount of detail. Also the character models look great and the environments also has a lot of detail. I didn't have any noticeable slowdown, and the only thing that I'm not sure if it's a glitch or purposely in the game is sometimes if you pick up a car it turns transparent, but it isn't noticeable at all.
Sound:
Although the voice acting is decent, some characters such as Batman sound a lot different from other games and movies. I would've preferred to just have the Justice League cast voice act for this game, but for the most part it is done okay. Batman is definetely not the intimidating Dark Knight, and Martian Manhunter doesn't sound as wise as he does in Justice League, but it still manages to keep you in the story. The music is good though and keeps with the game. Unfournately no Pro Logic II or Dolby Digital though.
Replay Value:
The game will take maybe a dozen hours give or take, but the unlockable characters and costumes may bring back for a couple and the RPG elements may make you want to make every character at top levels, but there isn't much reason otherwise to come back again.
Conclusion:
Justice League Heroes is a good dungeon crawler RPG, and definetely competes with Marvel games in the same genre. It may have some slow combat, and not being able to be your favourite's all the time is a little bummer, but the fantastic amount of RPG upgrades, the great roster, fun levels, and great graphics make up for it, and if your a die hard Justice League Unlimited fan, this is the perfect game for you.
