I didn't know what to think at first. Jak goes racing? No way it'll work. Naughty dog prove me wrong on the whole.

User Rating: 9.4 | Jak X: Combat Racing PS2
Many who have seen a platformer go racer (ahem.. Crash. cough!) before would probably try to avoid Jak X, which is what i did for some time. However, I decided to give it a shot since i played most of the good rentals. to tell you the truth, I enjoyed it alot.

First comes the Story. in this sequel to the supposedly "last" Jak game, Jak and Daxter go to Kras city to read the will of their previous employer, Krew (you all remember the fat guy, right?). During the will, Krew poisons Jak, Daxter, Ashelin, Torn, Kiera, and Rayn, Krew's daughter (yes, a daughter). the only way for them to get the antidote is to win the combat racing world championship. Though not as powerful as the last three installments, the story is still entertaining enough for fans to come back for more. Nearly every character comes back from the previous games, and most come back as racers (such as Sig and Kleiver).

Next is the Gameplay itself. In the game, you play almost identical to Mario Kart, where you drive your vehicle around the track picking up powerups to get an advantage in the race. The weapons are fairly powerful, but it is incredibly difficult to stay alive without being taken out. the good thing Naughty Dog threw in was the Counterattack feature. players can deflect missile so long as they have a rear weapon available. Some weapons can instantly take out enemies (and yourself), such as the peace maker, which eliminetes the racer in first place immediately.

Graphics and sound, hmm. yes, still left exactly the way it was: beautiful.

Like always, Jak X has a series of juicy unlockables. for example, Daxter not only plays with Jak in the vehicle, but he is also a seperate player, provided you unlock him first. other secrets include helmets and antennas for your vehicle. the vehicles aren't worth unlocking, so save your breath trying to work for them. the best tactic would be to upgrade your car with the winnings you recieve, but this is impossible since you are forced to work with a new "better" car as you progress through the tournaments.

Like I said, Naughty Dog had proved me wrong, but this game still has some errors that could have been avoided. I suggest players who are experts at the racing genre (especially Mario Kart veterans) to try this game out. It is very challenging and you might get a couple good laughs while you play.
