E3 '07: Iron Man First Look
Tony Stark is set to fly in this movie-based action game from Sega, and we've got a first look.
Marvel fans have enjoyed an embarrassment of riches in mainstream entertainment recently, with the biggest stars in the Marvel universe enjoying their moment on the silver screen and in a plethora of video games. The next Marvel icon set for the big-time treatment is the illustrious Iron Man, who's set to be the centerpiece of an action blockbuster in spring 2008 and a video game from Sega at around the same time. Though it's still very early in development, we got a chance to get a quick peek at the game to see where it's heading.
If you're not familiar with Iron Man lore, here's the quick primer: billionaire industrialist (and debonair playboy) Tony Stark spends his millions on a suit of armor that essentially turns him into a human tank--only this tank can fly, blast repulsor rays, and toss around ICBM missiles like they were twigs in his backyard. In the game, you'll play as Iron Man, battling a host of enemies in a game whose story borrows both from the upcoming Iron Man movie (starring actors Robert Downey Jr., Terrence Howard, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Jeff Bridges), and more than 40 years of Marvel history.
The E3 demo of the game showed off Iron Man flying through a snowy mountain range while he battled enemy forces holed up in military encampments throughout the level. The different kinds of weapons Iron Man faced were of a fairly generic sort--standard tanks, SAMs (surface-to-air missiles), and anti-air guns, but they gave a good indication of the different kinds of abilities Iron Man will have in the game. His main weapons will be repulsor rays, shot either from his palms or from a node on his chest, as well as missiles that weren't shown in the demo. Repulsor rays shot from his chest are more powerful than those from his hands, but will drain more of Iron Man's energy (indicated by a vertical meter on the left-hand side of the screen).
Though the control scheme hasn't been finalized yet, the development team currently has Iron Man's "hover" and "fly" abilities separated on the controller. When hovering, Iron Man will be able to drift from side to side, and it will make it easier to fire his repulsor rays at objects. When flying, you'll be able to fly at normal speed and super-speed, the latter of which will presumably offer you less maneuverability as you streak through the sky. One of the interesting restrictions on the current level was that if Iron Man flew too high into the air, he would be blasted by missiles from enemy MiG jets flying overhead. They weren't enough to bring him down completely; instead, they just kept him close enough to the ground to be in enemy weapon range.
One of the coolest moves we saw in the game was Iron Man grabbing ahold of incoming missiles and redirecting them back at the launcher that shot them. It's indicative of the kind of power Iron Man will have on hand. The mountainous landscape seemed to indicate a fairly open approach to gameplay, though as developers pointed out, the battlefield will be constantly evolving with new challenges for Iron Man to face as he explores the levels.
Though Sega was non-committal on which Marvel villains or heroes would appear in the game, we did see some familiar names in the game, including Tony Stark's best friend Jim Rhodes, and Avengers butler Jarvis, both of whom will provide audio tips and inform Stark of new mission objectives as you go. Stark's sassy secretary Pepper Potts will also reportedly be a part of the video game as well. And while we're hoping for plenty of cameo appearances from Marvel luminaries, we're also hoping we get to see plenty of different armor configurations for Iron Man. Sega was tight-lipped on that as well, though it did note that Tony would be able to upgrade his armor as he goes. We're personally keeping our fingers crossed for the red-and-silver getup from Shellhead's West Coast Avengers days.
For Iron Man fans, the wait for the game (and the movie) seems interminably long, as both are scheduled for a spring 2008 release on a multitude of platforms. We'll be keeping our eyes on this game's progress over the coming months and bringing you all the latest information.
i don't know why you all hate the game. i agree that most movie to game titles come out like crap, but this one didn't. it's among my favorite games
weird game
This is good
the good: nice movie. the bad : boring game
this was one of those lisence games that looked promising and then... sucked the ball juices out of me! horrible game!
this games just out right sucks
The movie is very good but the game seems like a missed opportunity to make the greatest marvel game ever released.
those of you who bought Iron man the game gotta be complete dumbasses. its been done b4. movie games suck especially recent ones. The whole purpose for this is to promote the movie and of course this game sucked.
The Demo was....... There are no words. I just hope the end game is Much better. The movie Rocked :P
the movie unlike this game is AWESOMENESS
the game looks terrible. the flying looks decent but when on the ground it looks like complete crap. this is the biggest pass on a game than i can remember in a long time.
The movie was pretty much...decent. Hope the game does good.
the movie was AWESOME!!! but the game looks crap...ever played the demo? its s***
This looks good, I wish there was more to the preview or review - oh well. It should have free rome like in Spider-Man
maaan ! i hope we can free-rome in this game ! blastin' objects and stuff !:)
maan ! i hope we could free-rome in this game ! :D
Seen the movie. Not Bad. I give 7/10. As for the game, I have yet to download the demo. I tried to download it on my PS3, but I'm having problem with the download. I will try to download the X360 demo, and if possible try to check out the difference between the two console version. d@@b
Whats with this trend that superhero video games based off of their summer movie counterparts seem to be let downs? Is it come kind of curse? Iron man is concentrated win in a can, but is that enough? And Heriberto, you know who Iron man is right? He EATS tanks.
This seems interesting.....just have to wait and see bout this one.
i just download the demo and it sucks maybe because iam a hardcore gamer or maybe because with 3 hits from your bare hands u can destroy a tank
well...let's just hope for the best....
arrite so we have so far seen movie to game of x-man, superman and transformers. all of em sucked. so yeah, look forward for iron man: the official game of the movie.
u know this game's gonna suck. There were so many b4 this that sucked. save ur money for something better ppl. dont buy this game.
i dont think the game is based on the movie except the armor. Its going to be GOOD
i also don't know about this game. i think that the best thing about this game would to be able to fly around other then that it will most likely be like the past hulk game at first its fun to smash then before you know it your already playing a different game.
Marvel has a reputation of making crappy movie-based games. Think spider-man got low scores, x-men got ones too (except if you exclude legends) and ghost rider got terrible scores also. Sega has a reputation of making crappy games too (no need to name them). Although I'm a Iron Man fan but don't expect high scores for this one. The game will be like this: First mission will be a tutorial not a real story mission, you collect stuff to unlock extras, you unlock moves by buying them aaaaaaaaaaand you fight dozen of enemies to get to the big bad boss. So nothing new, just another movie based marvel game.
This game sounds like its going to be alot like the AvP game. You're going to end up being overpowered and fight the same things every single level until you get bored and want to go break something. If it has a large landscape then that is a really good indicator that the loading times will be absolutely horrible. If you have high hopes for this game then you just might be naive, this game has been in production for an extreamly short amount of time. This will most likly be just another crappy movie game. When will people learn, good games don't make good movies, and good movies don't make good games.
looks neat, however i feel that the fly mechanic could use a little bit of touching up
The movie looks great, but I have the feeling that this game should come with a roll of toilet tissue. Let us remember VIKING the battle of Repetition.
This game is going to be drowned by the GTA fans, but it will still be awesome. From what I've played of the demo, as long as you're semi-intelligent, you WON'T die. Seriously, you're just about invincible. Tanks, helicopters, soldiers, turrets, missiles, and rockets are just toys to Iron Man. I played the demo and I was on formidable and I never died. Formidable is what most games have as normal. I just flew around launching grenades at em, blowing up with repulsors, ripping em the vehicles in half, punching the infantry 50 feet away, and oh yea, THE OMNI BEAM!! The omni beam can be used while you're hovering and it destroys everything short of mega tanks and super flying battle mechs. Iron Man is so overpowered, this should be interesting...
this game is gonna be completely overshadowed by gta4
pretty sweet
I'm tired of Comic to movie games based on the movies about the comics. The games are basically used as boost advertising, I don't understand why game developers don't just actually take their time to create a superhero game that is worthwhile, and not just do it when Hollywood is involved (because they always turn out like complete ass).
its gonna suck and no its doesnt matter how good graphics are. They aint gonna help anyone play the game for too long.
I agree with Alex_09 this looks good and since its next gen they could probably break the curse of bad video games based on movies
The punisher was pretty good so I might gamble on buying this. I wish I could just trust reviews on buying games but too many times I have bought a "bad" game in the eyes of pro reviewers to find out it was awesome.
can't wait, I'm a huge Iron Man fan since years ago always read the comic. Still do from time to time
YaY!!
More importantly than anything...Story....please not another just run around and blast things...I hope there is a story that underlies all of this
Wootage! Can't wait! :D
Getting this and The Dark Knight game even if they turn out to be crap. Come on, it's freakin' Iron Man and Batman, this summer. Oh, and Hulk and Hellboy as well.
better not turn out like superman
Dang! This game looks TIGHT!
I am so getting this game and the movie it looks sick :-D
Oh this is probably going to suck, because most of the movie based games do.
wonder if the game content is similar to spiderman 3.
Iron man Armor Suit: $1** millions Crysis Armor Suit : $1** millions Iron man vs Crysis : Priceless There's some money you can't buy in this game. Do you think this could happen in the future?
woot! this one comes to PC also :D
this game looks the meanest i am so getting this game :-D
cant wait for the movie, the trailer was sick!
