Mark shoots his way through the underwhelming, gravity-defying action of Inversion in our video review.
*****REVIEW FROM SOMEONE UNBIASED AND NOT ON THE PAY ROLL*****
So after seeing this review last night I decided to throw down $10 on a steam sale for this game so I could do a fair, impartial review being Mark Walton doesn't want to do his job
(If the "pay gamespot for a good review" thing is true, maybe he WAS doing his job. I cannot confirm or deny whether this is what happened and I choose not to have an opinion about that topic.)
-Rating
Lets get the rating out of the way. This game definitely does NOT deserve a 4. Even if I had to rate this game on a super shitty day where nothing was going right, my girlfriend broke up with me, my dog died, my house burned down and I found out I had AIDS, I still wouldn't low ball this game down to a 4.
Based on game play, storyline, graphics & audio, weapons and unique features, I'd say a more fair and realistic score is a 7. This is subject to change slightly as I haven't explored the co-op play or multiplayer. Assuming those both sucked terribly, I wouldn't dip down below a 6.5. If they were absolutely amazing I'd bump up as high as an 8.
-General Overview
Inversion is a game that bears a lot of similarities to Gears of War. It's your standard duck behind cover type of game with some new elements added to it.
Some of these new elements include gravity switching landscapes, weightlessness areas, and the gravlink, a gravity manipulation device you wear as sort of a back pack. It allows you to shoot bursts that either lower or increase gravity in the blast radius (as you upgrade it) and also has the ability to throw gravity altered items around. Think of that function kind of like the gravity gun from Half Life 2. Same basic principle.
One of the few complaints I had about this game is that it had a lot of potential for some very interesting puzzles using the gravity shifting features, but that potential, for the most part, was ignored. We're left with a very linear third person shooter scattered with occasional gravity puzzles. Even if you can't figure out the puzzles, you'll be given hints on what to do. Again, one of the few complaints I had about the game.
On the alternate side, the weightlessness areas are interesting and shooting people on different gravity planes from you is fun. At one point I was standing on the side of a skyscraper sniping some enemies on the main road. They looked like the ones who were on a wall and I thought "God I wish they had more of this in the game!"
-Story
The storyline isn't anything amazing, but it does have one and it's most certainly not as terrible as Mark would have you think. You follow the role of Davis Russel and his partner Leo Delgado in a near futuristic setting called Vanguard City. An alien race called "The Luteadore" that seem somewhat Cro-Magnonesque start tearing things up and you set out with the goal of finding Davis' daughter. Along the way you meet some allies and the storyline expands past JUST being about the father/daughter reuniting but I'll keep it at that. My goal isn't to ruin the storyline for people who would like to play.
-Weapons
There are quite a few weapons in the game, but you can only carry 2 primary weapons on you at any given time. Along with those you also get grenades and the gravlink. While some like having 8 or 9 different weapons at their fingertips, I appreciate the more realistic small load out.
Weapons included assault rifles, shotguns, sniper rifles, rocket launchers, miniguns, pulse rifles, and flame throwers (sorry if I missed any). Also, don't feel pressured to hoard specific weapons. If you get to a scenario where you need a rocket launcher or grenades, the game will provide you with them. Just look around.
I found myself using the assault rifle almost the entire game. If you're good at head shots (thank you Counter Strike!) then this will most likely be your weapon of choice. For my alt weapon I stuck with the minigun off of behemoths when I could get it, otherwise I tried keeping a sniper rifle on me. Try them all out and get a feel for what you like.
-Graphics
Inversion's uses the Saber3D engine and Havok physics. While I have seen better graphics, I've also seen MUCH worse. The graphics in this game are adequate and on par with this generations games. Don't be expecting anything incredible, but also don't expect Minecraft.
I haven't run into any glitches that I can recall, nor were there many movement issues such as getting stuck on objects. Occasionally I wasn't able to take cover behind certain objects that would make perfect sense to use as cover, but that's about the extent of problems I found.
-Audio
While weapon sound effects seemed pretty decent, the voice acting at times was down right horrid. At certain points in the game you see a character talking and all you hear in your head is some guy reading from a script in a studio. There's also parts where your partner will repeat himself over and over to the point of annoyance. This was probably the biggest complaint I have about the game and I strongly feel it's a major contributor to the game's storyline taking such a criticizing hit.
-Conclusion
The game is a 3rd person shooter that's worth a play through. With a variety of weapons, a few unique gimmicks to keep the game play from going stale, decent graphics, an ok story line to follow, and a play style that's similar to an already established and successful game, it's nothing to scoff at.
Be your own judge and give it a shot.
For PC people, I picked it up for $10 on a steam sale. You can always use steamalerts.com to get a notification of when a steam game is at or below a certain price.
I hope this review has helped people more than the review Mark did. Feel free to leave some feedback.
This is probably one of the worst video game reviews I've seen in a long time.I'd really like to see this re-reviewed by someone else. Preferably someone who some like they can be objective when it comes to reviewing. This guy seems completely focused on all the negatives of the game and doesn't tell us what the good qualities are. Furthermore it seems the reviewer is trying to find fault with anything and everything possible. Some people might be saying "maybe it doesn't have any good qualities". Well, that may be, so I looked up some other reviews before posting this and they don't seem to share the same hatred as this one does.Very disappointed in this review, GameSpot. :-/
Some video reviews you'd rather watch on mute, becuase you only came to see the footage and/or you don't want to hear from a particular reviewer, other times you want to listen, not that you agree with it on all occasions but you welcome another pov and the extra information- this is a review I watch with Mute on.
I will probably give this a try when it hits a Steam sale. If you get it cheap enough, then you can get enough out of it for the amount you put out for it. Right now it's $39.99 on Steam- perhaps a Christmas sale will have it low enough.
@Tidal_Abyss It's on sale right now for 10 bucks on steam. While Christmas is a great time to get games cheap on steam, the weekend after Thanksgiving is just as notorious ^_^I'm strongly considering picking it up just to see if it's any good. I mean getting a $40 game for $10 is a pretty low risk venture.

@DeanBetamberine Gravity manipulation? done in Prey. Throwing objects? Half-Life. Weak guns? Multiple headshots required with some and 4 rockets needed to take out a simple manned turret. You were right about the cutscenes, though. And the voice acting, which isn't bad, although the writing is weak. As for graphics, who cares how good it looks if the gameplay isn't very good? I could just watch a good CG movie instead.
@epressman617 @DeanBetamberine why did I sound so angry in that, serious problem of mine.I;m doing a review right now, it's a lot more coolheaded than that comment.I realise now that the character looks like Drake, the enemies look to be inspired by Borderlands. Gunplay is gears of war. Heavies are from Killzone 2/3.I know it's a ripoff but I feel like it should be given a BIT more credit.I guess I was angry because it seemed to be an absolute slaughter of the game, coupled with the rumour that I heard about not paying for a good review, made me extremely pissed off.The boss fights are nice at least, if not recycled later on in the game.
This is my second comment in an hour on a video review. I should've use copy-paste, but I so love to say it! This review is as mindless as the voice says about this game. What?! Are these paid reviews? =) It's pathetic. It's laughable. You need to be fired friend.
This review basically goes like this: Talk to hear your own voice, cry about GoW, talk to hear your own voice, say mindless, talk to hear your own voice, cry about GoW again... repeat ad infinitum.
Did they let janitors to review games now? Oh, this economic crisis...
@VampySS On top of that I'd like to add that Binary Domain in my personal opinion is lot worst game and it scored 7.5 on GS so WTF ???
Totally disagree with this review. Shooting is solid and gravity powers are fun to use. Maybe it's not best game of this summer but in my opinion deserves at least for 7+/10.
My guilt pleasure is Duke Nukem Forever...No one else likes that game but I Love it, I've played through it at least 30 times
BS! Looks good to me. Id play this over GoW anyday, at least the characters aren't oversized. And the release price is fair.
@bigruss51 Saw your comment. Thought you'd like to know it's a whole 10 bucks on steam right now for the black friday weekend sale (The sale is actually what got me looking for reviews on this) Check it out.
I used to trust Gspot reviews, well not anymore. This has to be worst review I've ever saw. This game its not original, but very few games this generation can be called original. I'm not saying this is a masterpiece, but its not half as bad as this guy made it sound. A 7.0 would be fair.
just sounds like the reviewer doesnt like the game for not being innovative. he doesnt actually mention any bad game mechanics or gameplay flaws.
ppl bored coz its again fps ,i prefer more and more idie games, there is something new or forgotten very good old remakes
Who gives a shit if the video review was poor or not. This is still an extremely derivative and boring game. If you're all so butthurt just buy the goddamn game and stop complaining!
Well, its not my kind of game but the game certainly, at least work, I've seen worst and this is pretty OK, too bad Gears Of War was actually being the one stated as the first third person cover based shooting, when predecessors earlier was never mentioned, its always a comparison to Gears of War this, Gears of War that, I mean, the bloody Gears Of War was not even the most original since its concept and even the engine is based on the Unreal Tournament.
At least these guys actually bloody build themselves a graphic engine rather than just get one copy and improve it.
Now its always a comparison to Gears Of War, why Call of Duty and Battlefield was never compared???? Making comparison with Gears of War its not the way to review a game, be more god damn professional in this.
I watched some other reviews for this game from other websites and they all said the same thing that it was boring lacked polish and was poorly executed. They may not have paid for the review but it would seem that it is actually rubbish. Also in my experience Gamespot reviews have been spot on and I always check out games here before I buy
LOL: this reviewed almost sounded like a "Zero Punctuation" review, minus the profanity.
Sounds like the reviewer was mostly disappointed by the lack of originality in "Inversion," even more so than the gameplay problems.
I'll still give it a fair shot, if there is a demo out to try.
@GAME-QUEST-EX Gamespot does paid reviews and Namco wouldn't pay so they decided to give it the worst review they could. They do unjust testimony like this from time to time, then they scream from the mountains how great a completely mediocre EA game is, because that's what they're paid to do.
Wow: is that really true? Because if it is, then this can't be really considered as a fair review in anyway.
I agree a let down rip off of several popular ganes. Played it for several hours and got bored. Added to my library of poor games.
In my book it gets a 7.0 to 7.5, 4.0 is way to low for this creative shooter.
This Review is Awful. Specially because the reviewer doensn't want to do his job! He was tired or something... who knows... nothing useful for the readers here...
Third person shotters are mostly based in the same mechanics! Even Mass Effect has the same mechanics, Uncharted has it, Max Payne 3 has it... and MANY MORE... with a couple of differences in the buttons layout... but nothing more...
If your review, my friend, is MOSTLY based on the Game´s shooting mechanics, you are not doing your work well... I couldn't ever know how the particularities of this game works, not guided for your words... You may not like the whole game, that's ok, but you must have a solid point of view, not just applying the "Looks like" "Ripped of" Method... Is low... really low...
@totinomimi The review is awful because the reviewer is doing a hit piece to punish Namco for not paying bribes to his company.
so let me get this straight: it's exactly like gears of war, but with some story, even as weak, and bad voice acting. other than that, exactly like gears of war with antigravity twist. but not one gears of war scored bellow 9. not one.
Most likely a pass for me... if it was split-screen, i probably would've got it when it went on sale at $20
Another TERRIBLE review. Congrats, Gamespot!
"Fortunately you can skip the cutscenes"? That's the way of the brainless gamer -- which I think is the case of this reviewer here...
You can't give a game a bad score because it's not original. Not all people have played Gears Of War and all the other 3rd Person Shooters. To them, this might be an 8 or 9, but they might not buy it cos this sh*tty review gave it a 4.
Agreed! Only played GoW for very short time cause it was boring for me but this looks more of an interesting setting. Kind of seems like a split between DUke Nukem and alien vs predator except 3rd person.
I sort of like it. I enjoy b movie plots, and I have been waiting for a gears of war substitute. Probably will get.
I am playing this game and it really is a cool game,i can't believe how Inversion has a score like this...this can't be true :S
Another one of those games I'll get from Gamefly when they have it under 10 bucks, which judging from all the terrible reviews it's gotten, could be pretty soon.
Im tired of people comparing games and taking points away based on a cover system. Who cares. If it was real life you want togo from cover to cover. Who cares if Gears did it 1st or better. Move on. Shooters are all the same now. The only thing that keeps me coming back is hopefully a good story, fun gameplay and if its a little lacking in any of that, you may still get me with some coop. Mercenaries 2 is a prime example of that.
