Gamescom 2012: We chat with Ed Boon about Catwoman, designing a fighting game, and the importance of EVO.
No Ed Boon, you don't. You have the recipe to make an alright fighting game. Stop lying to yourself and to your fans, most of your fighting games are alright, even though Mortal Kombat is one of my favorites.
Looks interesting. I know Boon didnt want to compare it to MK but I hope the online at least works on this title coz MK's online is horrible
you gotta give boon some credit. he did give us mortal kombat but at the same time... mortal kombat hasnt been relevant since the 90s. A good fighting game has excellent controls that are easy to play but challenging to master. I hated the later MK games because you had to press so many buttons to do 1 move. I much prefer the controls from tekken or doa than lets say mortal kombat deadly alliance
@FreedomPrime Dude, you're crazy!
@IAMTYLERDURDEN No, Ive been checked. Mk is slow, and easy to master. Play me in either games and you will see what I mean. the game is very unbalanced and repetitive. Oh, I am also ranked 126 currently on XBLA in MVC2. I know my fighters. I have the skills to prove it bro. XBLA tag spidermancanrun. was ranked 2 in the world at my peak. booooya.
@FreedomPrime In your opinion, and your opinion its not everyone's opinion. :)
@Gamod so why did non of the Mk games were accepted into EVO until the last game? it's cause they were too clunky, unbalanced and lacked depth. MK 9 was good, but not great. also the year MK came out not that many good fight games came out. the only competition was a expansion for street fighter, and you cant give game of the year to a game that was released 3 times. Street fighter 4 when it debuted in 2009 won fighting game of the year and scored a 9.0 out 0f 10. Mk scored a 8.5 out of 10. Owned.
Well, I like the game, I like SF4, but I think they put more effort into MK, they have more game functionalities, more features, and so on. And this is my opinion, I love the game and I still play both, but latelty more MK.
@Gamod that statement makes no sense sir. Mk and street fighter 4 came out in different years, you were saying that MK is better and you used the fact than Mk won fighting game of the year. well that makes zero sense cause street fighter 4 came out years before MK. also if you just look at the reviews, street fighter scored Higher overall then MK. you have been served
they came in diferent years, and btw, 0.5?
@Gamod Ikr? lol MK sucked? It got fighter of the year!
i know how to make a good fighting game. no block button 1st of all and maybe better looking normals
@victorlamy why not? I dont have a problem with block buttons, different games - different mechanics. SO every fighting game needs to play like a SF game? Sold my SC5 because they messed with the original gameplay, I think SF4 gameplay is perfect for SF games, MK gameplay for MK games, and SC gameplay (i mean, 1,2,3,4 NOT5) perfect for SC games and so on. SFxTK had everything to be a great game, but that gem system has to be reworked (and the pandora too).
It had better have a fully fleshed out single player story campaign mode. Couch co-op is great and all and online co-op is pretty much a must in fighting games these days but for replayability they better pull out all the stops and give us the all around experience.
it's been a while since I've actually really looked forward to a straight-up beat-em' up. And now I can safely say that I am REALLY looking forward to this.
I'm just exicted about this game simply because I believe it is a showing of things to come with the next MK such as multi staged levels and no crab walking ect.
PS Batman looks bad ass in that poster.
I'm hoping there's a massive single player campaign like Mortal Kombat so I have a reason to play by myself while also wanting to play with others.
Looks good, but I'm not into superheroes tho. This generation Tekken (Tekken 6) failed miserably. Street Fighter 4 was good. But Mortal Kombat was and still is great! Clear winner of this generation fighting games. End of it!
@snaketus MK is really great! :) The best fighting game of this gen! Still playing it! And I have SFxTK, TK, SF and MVSC.
@Gamod also, street fighter got a 9.0 out of 10, MK got a 8.5. Mk and street fighter 4 did not come out in the same year, sf4 came out in 09.
@Gamod Mortal kombat is NOT the best fighting game of this generation. street fighter 4 is.
@Gamod street fighter also is the god father of fighting games, if street fighter never was created neither would have MK. ed boon said along time ago that he made MK after playing street fighter and he was trying to emulate it. Street fighter is more fluid, the characters have more depth to them, it's a 6 button fighter with light, medium and heavy attack for punches and kick's. Which makes the game have more depth. also, it is far more popular on the pro fighting game scene.
@FreedomPrime WRONG! Tekken has been the best fighter of all time. Street Fighter is good too tho
@FreedomPrime Yes it is!!! It got Fighting game of the year! Over SF, Tekken etc... Statistics don't lie fanboy or not! & I don't clarify myself as a fanboy
@FreedomPrime I like SF4, bough it when came out SF4 for PC, after for Xbox with super street fighter and again the AE. I think MK has a more responsive gameplay, better online lobby and online gaming, more character and moves/gameplay diversity. In my opinion, MK is really much better. The menu is really organized, there is + single player modes including a decent story mode, a good tutorial, overall, I think there's + effort in MK when compared to SF (sf just arcade mode basically, and the online is so basic). For some reason, MK was the fgame of the year (2011). I really dont like how capcom implements their online modes, they're not that good, and how some players play all the same or identically (there's only 3 to 4 moves variations (the more defensive ones, the more attackers, the middle ones, the grabbers) . SF4 was the best game of this generation when was released, yeap, when there was no decent competition (even though, VF5 was really a good game)
I really shouldn't buy this game, but I want to. Whenever I get a fighting game I always seem to play it for a couple of weeks or so, and then it just collects dust. That was the case for SFIV and the new Mortal Kombat. I guess they just don't have the appeal they did when I was 18. This game does look pretty freakin' sweet though.
I too know a recipe: take one Arc System Works studion, add some code and time, shake a bit, sprinkle with a bit of oddity and voila! New Guilty Gear, straight from the oven.
I like Boon, he knows his stuff, however I don't really like this Injustice stuff, it just doesn't sit well for me.
I always hate it when Superman is pitted against any other superhero because he has been designed so badly from his conception that for it to even make sense they have to weaken him. I'm not saying that they have implemented that here, it's just always been a pet peeve of mine.
Superman is, hands down, the most poorly designed superhero.
@ALLoY1717 Are you kidding? Superman is the starting point to all super heros to date. There are plenty of other characters across all universes that can defeat him. Just not that many within the DC universe.
I swear people who complain about Superman have no never read story about him. Or forget that Superman in this game is not the Superman in the comics.
It's like you guy never watch TTGL or Asura Wrath.
@ALLoY1717 Well, lets look at him for a second.... He's impervious to basically anytihing except for a green rock and magic. He's strong enough to stop an asteroid from colliding with the planet. He can freeze, fry, create tornadoes, super senses, and if he DOES get manage to get hurt, a few minutes in sunlight heals him... Where is the fun in any of that for a gamer? It's basically God Mode. Comicbook writers, movie makers, and game designers have fought with the design for decades, because it's difficult to maintain a character that is omnipotent, and make him something the viewer can relate to. You can only read or watch Superman easily overpower adversaries so many times before it gets dull.
It's like Charles Xavier in the X-Men movies. All he had to do is use his power to shut down everyone, and voila, end of movies... but no, they had to get him "out of the way" with plot devices.
The games follow a similar idea... Superman cannot be invincible, because then the fun is gone. If he beats flash just by poking him, the game is stupid. I have NO problems with the way Superman is handled in DCU:Online, MKvsDCU, or SuperMan Returns, and I doubt I'll have any problems with Injustice.
No one complains about Marvel vs Capcom having the Hulk beat by Megaman. Hulk is almost as invulnerable as Superman.
@ALLoY1717 It's not that Superman is poorly designed, it's that developers don't know how to reasonably use him against others that can't fight him on equal footing. Unless he's always going to be pitted against Doomsday, or Darkseid, or Solomon Grundy, or someone similar then you wind up with weird character concessions or odd ball story choices being made to explain why Superman isn't operating at his potential. The character of Superman actually has a lot of depth and inner struggle that makes him a great character. He's just awkward in video games because you can't reasonably have everyone runninng around with Kryptonite rings or being a magic user.
@ALLoY1717 Superman was more or less the first super hero so as the first it's reasonable to say they didn't know where to stop and it has been said that superman can only not do things he hasn't tried yet, so yes you are correct but it's kind of like saying a prototype isn't as good as the mass produced version.
Its the first time I hav found bad comments regarding Mortal Kombat, with all respect if you cant enjoy or appreciate or recognize the quality of this games in this case MK then just proves there are people that since they know nothing of this genre cant make a reliable opinion or comparison between games of this genre.
I consider myself a consosieur of fighting games were my favorites since the snes, and although it was in danger to be surpassed with the evidetly force consumption of fps by the industry i have almost all the games of this generation that s worthy to have, i can assure that theres no other game right now that can match the experience to smash a body than MK. I was not a fan of the first MK titles but I playthem all along with ps2 titles and i have not found a better evolution of a classic or newer fighting game than MK.
Injustice appear to have the essence or main core of the recent MK but as Ed said it is not a MK similarities end here. Is as much to tell that every fps game is the same like CDuty or nfl or ncaa or nba game ok forget the last four examples

@Gelugon_baat Hype fades and people walk away from hype after so long, focusing on Fundamentals and avoiding littering your fight games with subsystem on subsystem and gimicks keeps people playing them for 20+ years. Hype will sell units until you try to to sell hype for the second time
That's funny, because last I checked Mortal Kombat 9 was complete shit and as far as I can tell, Injustice is Mortal Kombat 9-2. Only reason it sold so well is because Mortal Kombat is a huge franchise.
@xSagez MK is one of the best fighting games of this gen, in fact, its the n1 one for me... for some reason was the fgame of the year in 2011.
@xSagez The last Mortal Kombat succes was in the Snes and Arcade. The company broke because of it
@xSagez LOL Where did you check? the MK reboot was a financial success, critically acclaimed, and the best game in the series since MK2. If you are gonna troll, at least have some facts to support your troll opinion, otherwise you just come across as a total loser. LOL
Injustice looks promising, but I hope they put in the classic costumes as well as the movie-style/Chris Nolan universe type costumes.
