Bog standard beat em up. Dont expect much fun from this one.

So as a laugh I bought this game and boy did it make me laugh. Having never seen Ikki Tousen on the telly, I wasn't aware of what I was getting into. Schoolgirls beating people up? Nice! Clothes being all ripped up whan you use a super attack on the end of level boss... WHA-?

This game ends up being a very tedious beat em up. I presume that the TV show concept is about girlies ( and a couple of boys) smacking each other around a bit until their clothes get ripped. So, if the show is about fighting, then why does this fighting game feature really poor fighting mechanics? Honestly, Streets of Rage on the Megadrive is a more complex fighter than this game.

Each game consists of this:
Choose mode, Arcade mode lets you play though about 8 level of tedious cross and occasional triangle pressing until the end. Story Mode lets you play through (suprprise, surprise) a story, as different characters to progress said story which is done through voiced cutscenes and more tedious square and triangle pressing.

You will find one limited combo that works and spam the hell out of it until you reach the end. Which isnt very hard at all. Thete is a grab attack when you get close to an enemy, but it only consists of the same animation used for another attack. You have one type of jump attack which will be forgotten about after you find a winning combo, which is given to you in the pause menu. There are a lot of characters to choose from, but that just prolongs the tortuous agony of the game if you wnat to finish it completely.

Once the arcade mode is finished, that character's bio is opened in the Gallery and mode and if you finished on medium r hard difficulty, you get a new "Secret costume" which is usually a shool swimming cossie with which you can now play the Arcade mode with the same character on the aforementioned swimwear. YAWN. Rinse and repeat until all characters are done, you have RSI in your thumb or (and this is more likely) you have come to the conclusion that this game is dull.

Even the lame clothes destroying aspect is tedious. Use your super on end of level boss as a finishing move and you get a little single frame slide show of the boss with tattered clothes. Hmmmm rewarding.... Or not as the case may be.

Graphics 6/10
Nice character representations, but where is the animation? Only 2 frames for a run? Lazy

Sound 5/10
Some nice tunes, but they are repeated often. Good voice acting during cut scenes and when using a super attack.

Gameplay 4/10
This is where the game falls down. Square, square, square, triangle. Is the only button combination you will need. The girl with the bow and arrow doesn't even need the trianlge. I managed to complete a number of the levels with my eyes closed. Sad but true.

So to summarise this, the game is tedious and somewhat boring with basic gameplay I would expect from a game made 15 odd years ago. Buy if you want to waste some money or for a laugh (although I could have found funnier things for my cash).
