A space shooter unlike any other.

Its nice to see an old-school style shooter in present day times and what place better than on the Gamecube? Ikaruga will test your skills hard while giving you an insane spaceship trip.

The main theme behind the game is polarity. Everything in the game is black or white; literally. You can switch between the colors with a simple press of the A button. All enemies in the game will be one color or the other and the bullets they shoot out will be the color that they are currently. If you are the same color you can absorb their bullets, however, if you're the opposite color you'll die if you get hit.

So, why not just stay the same color as whats shooting at you? Well, sometimes this is the best strategy, but you get double points and do double damage when shooting opposite colors as enemies. You can indeed kill them with the same color they are (unlike them shooting you). Another advantage to being the same color and absorbing the shots is that you'll charge up a laser that you can release which will do huge damage on everything on screen (if fully charged).

When I say this game will test your skills, I mean it. It's hard. There will be times when there are shots of both colors coming at you and it doesn't even look like you can avoid any of them, but somewhere on screen is a spot for you. A very tiny spot that will allow you to survive. Bosses are insane about shooting all kinds of awkward things at you that you'll need to practice to avoid.

However, practice mode is something this game offers. As you complete more and more of the game you can back through and practice it. You can do a slow down mode which lets you play through levels, or sections of levels at half speed and see the time of certain things; this can be a big help. But as I said, you have to complete it once on your own first.

I think there's a story to this game, but I'm pretty sure you just have to read the manual to get it. So don't count on being intrigued by a magical tale, because I still don't even know if there is one.

However, there are some unlockables that are meh. Lots of artwork. On the good side though after X hours of playtime, or completing in a certain amount of credits (it acts like an arcade game, continues use "credits") you can unlock more credits and eventually unlimited credits. This is a big help to those of use who aren't space shooter experts and die a lot through the last level (which is insane).

This is a totally cool game for anyone who's down with playing a spaceship shooter. This game can also be played with your tv sideways, but I think there is something in perticular you are supposed to have to do this; turning your tv on its side isn't good for it (my colors all turned green when I did it). An awesome game for sure, I'll give it two thumbs up in a heartbeat.
