Hydrophobia is a decent game that drowns in its own design flaws.

User Rating: 5.5 | Hydrophobia: Prophecy PC
The story takes place in the future where most of mankind has been wiped out by global flooding and thus they built a giant ship to give mankind hope. The ship is attacked in the beginning of the game by terrorists called the Malthusians who believe that anyone who wont join their cause should die. Basically they're upset that nobody listened to their prophet about the coming floods so of course it makes sense to kill the rest of the population off. To make a long story short, the story was pretty weak in this game and I didnt really care about any of the characters.

In the game you play as Kate who is some kind of engineer on this ship and also has Tomb Raider-esque climbing skills. She also carries a pistol that can fire various types of ammo pickups that you'll find in the game. She also gains a type of psychic power late in the game that lets her move a tower of water around to sweep enemies of their feet or throw objects. I found the gameplay to interesting but it was very easy and I never really felt challenged. The few times I did die I found the checkpoint system to be annoying in that it took me back to the beginning of that entire segment to fight all of the bad guys again. Any objects or documents you collected are also reset.

The visuals in this game are quite good for a low budget indie game. The water movies in a somewhat realistic way and you play with said physics to flood or drain areas. It comes in handy if you want to sweep a bad guy off his feet to gain the upper hand or just to drown him. Overall I would say this looks like a solid last gen game. The sound quality in this game is also very good and it does take advantage of surround sound. However, I did feel that there was far too much "background noise" in some areas of the game that got annoying.

Hydrophobia is not as polished as it should be considering this was originally released for Xbox Arcade last year and they've been trying to fix it up so people will like it. Another downside is that this game is $9.99 but most people will only get 3-5 hours out of it including the Challenge mode. There is no multiplayer component like other games with such short single player campaigns. I think this game is worth picking up if it's on sale and you're bored. I would like to see them get the player more involved with the characters and story in the next game.
