Our Top Tech Picks

  • Xbox 360

    Xbox 360

Microsoft's Xbox 360 console offers a compelling game library, as well as the excellent online game service Xbox Live for online play, friends lists, chat, and Xbox Live Arcade, which offers dozens of additional games for download. The New Xbox Experience also enables Netflix video streaming for Xbox Live Gold subscribers. Microsoft priced the Xbox 360 Arcade system at $199, but we recommend paying more to get either the $249 Xbox 360 Pro or the $299 Elite, because both systems come with a hard drive that you'll need to access Xbox Live.

  • PlayStation 3

    PlayStation 3

The Sony PlayStation 3 is a powerful console with impressive graphics, as well as a built-in Blu-ray player for high-definition video buffs. The PlayStation 3 also features online play via the PlayStation Network, for online multiplayer as well as full game downloads. Console owners can now create 3D avatars and interact with other players in Sony's free PlayStation Home service. The latest, and in our opinion, best version of the PS3 is the PS3 Slim, a smaller, lighter version of the console with a substantial 120GB hard drive that currently retails for $299.

  • Nintendo Wii

    Nintendo Wii

Nintendo's Wii console offers a unique motion-control scheme using its wireless Wii Remote controller. The system is a great gift for people who usually don't play video games, because the Wii's intuitive controls make it easy for novices to learn how to play. You can play group- and family-friendly party games, such as Wii Sports, and the more-traditional Mario and Zelda games, as well as classic downloadable games from the system's Virtual Console library. Console owners can also download WiiWare games developed specifically for the Wii. You can find the base Wii retailing for $199.99. Bundle packs with games and controllers will run closer to $250 on up.

  • Nintendo DSi

    Nintendo DSi

The Nintendo DSi is a well-rounded handheld system with an unusual control scheme that combines the traditional gamepad and button controls with a touch-screen interface. Two cameras let you interact with new games in a variety of ways, and the built-in memory lets you store games purchased from the online DSiWare store. The DSi is home to many family-friendly games, as well as some great action, strategy, and puzzle games. The basic system is available in a variety of colors for $169. Nintendo still has the $129 DS Lite for sale, but you won't get access to the DSiWare store or games that take advantage of the DSi's cameras.

  • PlayStation Portable Slim & PSP Go

    PlayStation Portable

The Sony PlayStation Portable packages powerful hardware into a sleek handheld that delivers graphics and audio performance rivaling the PlayStation 2. Sony's newest model on the market, the PSP-3000, features an improved screen and a built-in microphone. Compared to the PSP-2000, the 3000's screen is capable of displaying a wider range of colors, and it also has faster response times that help eliminate onscreen blurring. You can find the PSP-3000 in the PSP Core Pack for $169 and the PSP Ratchet & Clank Entertainment Pack for $199. In October, Sony will release the PSP Go, a modified version of the PSP for $250. Sony is making several changes with the PSP Go, such as removing the UMD drive and adding 16GB of memory to store games. To learn more about the PSP Go, read our PSP Go hands-on preview.

  • Samsung 52" LCD HDTV

    Samsung LN52B750

A new HDTV is a gift the entire family can enjoy. PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 players will love playing games at full HD resolutions, and everyone can watch high-definition television or Blu-ray movies on the HDTV when it's not being used for gaming. Large 52" LCDs, such as the Samsung LN52B750, are available for about $2,000. We like the Samsung because it has a beautiful screen with a 4ms response time that can handle quick gameplay. The display also has four HDMI ports that provide enough support for an Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and two more HDMI devices.

  • Wii Play

    Wii Play

The Wii shines in group environments where everyone in the room is following the action with a controller in hand. The only problem is that the Wii system ships with only one Wii Remote. That means the first Wii accessories most new system owners buy are controllers number two, three, and four. Nintendo classifies Wii Play as a game because it's a collection of minigames, but the $50 package also includes a Wii Remote. The bundle is a nice deal because the controller by itself sells for $40, so it's like getting an extra game for $10.

  • Fanatec Porsche 911 Turbo S Wheel

Fanatec Porsche 911 Turbo S Wheel

A racing wheel is an obvious gift for racing game fans. Exchanging the gamepad for a racing wheel transforms the racing experience into a real physical activity where players fight the wheel instead of tapping on the directional pad. The Fanatec Porsche 911 Turbo S is a luxury wheel featuring hand-stitched leather, force feedback, and wireless USB connectivity. The wheel comes in three different editions: ClubSport Edition, 911 Turbo S Edition, and Pure Edition, respectively priced at $479.95, $329.95, and $199. The ClubSport Edition comes with two gear shifters, a 6+1 H-shifter and a sequential shifter, and fancy aluminum pedals. The 911 Turbo S Edition has everything that the ClubSport has (but with less-fancy pedals), and the Pure Edition doesn't come with any pedals at all. We can't do much about the price for the full wheel and pedal sets, but at least they're compatible with the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

  • PlayStation 3 Wireless Keypad

    PlayStation 3 Wireless Keypad

Help ease your loved one's PlayStation 3 texting pain with a PlayStation 3 Wireless Keypad. Sony introduced the accessory to keep users chatting at an acceptable speed on its online PlayStation Home service. The $49 Wireless Keypad fits snugly on top of the Dual Shock 3 or Sixaxis controller and provides players with a full miniature keyboard for quick text entry.

  • Razer Mamba Gaming Mouse

    Razer Mamba Gaming Mouse

Razer makes high-end peripherals for the discerning player. We feel that this wireless Mamba gaming mouse represents the current pinnacle of mousing technology. The supersensitive 5600DPI sensor and 1000Hz polling rate catch the Mamba's every movement with precision and translates that movement to your computer with little to no lag. Well-made buttons, slick feet, and a highly configurable software suite round out the mouse's bag of tricks. You can use the included recharge dock or plug in a USB wire to recharge the batteries, and you can even convert the mouse to wired mode should the need arise. Priced at $130, the Mamba isn't exactly a budget mouse, but it's quite possibly the most responsive gaming mouse available.
