I generally prefer to get physical copies of my games. I like having a little box to sit up next to all my other little boxes, and I dislike relying on the existence of whatever service I purchase the game from being operation 20 years from now if I'm feeling nostalgic. I don't see physical copies of the game being sold at Amazon.com or Gamestop.com though, are there going to be physical copies at all? I see I can preorder from websites like sears.com and kmart.com, but I don't exactly expect them to be on the cutting edge of what's going on in the gaming world.

I got an email from Bestbuy.ca about a month ago saying they'd cancelled my preorder because no physical copies are being produced.

i just noticed this aswell. I was going to pre-order pc copy from gamestop but its only available for download??? wtf !!! then i went over to amazon cart and hitman was listed under, "not available" o_0 this is looking very disheartening at the moment. i'm not a fan of digital downloads unless its dlc

To be honest ... I welcome it.

We live in 2012, it's good that we phase out physical data carriers like DvDs and stuff.

The UK Amazon is yet to update this info and is showing a hard copy available for purchase. May hold off on the amazon pre-order.

Hitman Absolution uses Steamworks so you're going to be tied to Steam regardless of if you get a physical copy.

Steamworks or not...having a physical copy always means a faster install time....and if this is true then this doesn't bode well for future PC games .

No it doesn't. You can preload the game before it's released on steam.
I'm all for digital version of games, simply because I don't believe game stores deserve to take $15-20 cut from the $60 for simply distributing and putting the game on the shelves. Steam takes a cut too, but rumor has it is a lot less. Also, if it's a valve game then steam probably doesn't take anything since they own it, so down the line when every big publisher will have their own online distribution method, pointless third party store cut should be eliminated.

I still stand by what i said....if you ever need to reinstall it naturally will be faster to have the disk and the difference is quite a bit unless you have a godly connection.

I for one don't like this either or what sounds like will be the "norm" with game purchasing. Those who "welcome" this move have no idea, especially as games get larger and larger. Max Payne 3 is 27gb. Other "newer" games will eventually be equally as large or larger. Which means you'll need a couple TB just to have space for games as well as a MANDATORY internet connection with NO INTERRUPTIONS!!! If your hard drive ever crashes, you'll have to go and down load EVERYTHING again. Say you get a corrupt file during the 24 hour down load or a power outage happens, gotta start all over. Maybe "Steam" will go under at some point and all the games you "bought" are no longer there for your choosing. Still "content" with a down load only game? Say 5-10 years from now when everything will have changed and you want to dust off the game and pop it in the PC. But wait, you don't actually "own" the game and the PC you had 10 years ago, died 8 years ago, and Steam fizzled away 7 years ago. You'll almost be forced to find an ISO copy somewhere that'll probably be laden with malware.

All I can say is they BETTER start lowering the prices since it's not costing them as much overhead. And I REFUSE to pay my cable company a stupid amount for a faster connection to download a game faster. Guess we can say good bye to the "play it the night it was released". Especially if it's a popular game and 40 million are trying to down load at the same time. Another annoying factor is say you decide to "save" everything to a blank disc or flash drive and for some reason you can't access or lost the original login data tied to an online service.... these idiot companies are killing the experience out of paranoia of pirating. Gone are the days of popping a cartridge or CD in and just playing right away. Who'd of thought that would have been a privilege?

^Corrupted download? There is error detection/correction for these things.

"Gone are the days of popping a cartridge or CD in and just playing right away. "

Yeah, those days are gone. Even console games are slow and require updates (or, in the case of the PS3, mandatory installations for some games).

I'm not going to disagree with the rest of your points. Most of that has at least some validity.

No hard copy.....no PC purchase for me. I was just wondering which system I would purchase this game on. The Xbox 360 or the PC. I'm slowly trying to convert to PC gaming in late 2012 early 2013. If this game is download only then I don't want a piece of it. UNLESS as someone stated the prices go way down. There will be no hard copies, manuals, prints, or anything. So the price should be cheaper. Otherwise I'll be buying this game on consoles.

Also I was just on the Hitman website and there is clearly "PC-DVD" box with the game disc shown. I guess I'll have to check into this.

    Edit:

Just checked Amazon. The PC [download only] is selling for $44.99. So you'll save a whopping $14.96. Seems like it should be even less if you ask me. The companies must make their money I suppose. I simply prefer hard copies of my games.

I prefer boxed copies whenever given the choice but I completely understand why PC games are going the route of digital downloads more often than not. Multiplatform games tend to sell less on the PC, and if there's no money being invested into printing out copies of the copy, boxes, artwork, and manuals there's less cost overall. There's no need to ship any physical product to retailers and no overhead. Not only would that mean the cost of PC games would more than likely stay at the current $50 or fall even lower, but the publishers would be making far more money and perhaps giving us PC gamers something a bit more than lackluster ports.

It's also going to be great if ISPs change their business model from a monthly fee to charging based on bandwidth usage...

Dang I really dislike digital copies, this is disappointing to hear Like LazyAmerican said, it's simply always more convenient and faster to install/reinstall from a disc than it is to DL from the internet (though yes, pre-loading is a great touch).

Really though, more than that, I just like having nice game boxes with neat box art and screenshots, as well as a shiny physical copy of the game and a material instruction booklet.

I'm right there with you. There's just something so underwhelming about "buying" a game and not opening up the packaging and installing via disc. "Buying" a game, downloading it, then playing it doesn't have the same appeal for me. But you know, if doing this means the PC market can thrive then I say by all means.

So have they confirmed any physical copies for the PC in the US. Or will we be forced to purchase a Professional Edition. I still see that PC-DVD box on the official page.

I remember reading that Square Enix mentioned they have no plans whatsoever to release the retail disc of Absolution for PC in North America.

Isn't really that surprising though since titles like Silent Hill Homecoming and Resident Evil: ORC was absent for the physical retail release in NA. Most likely to save physical distribution cost and maximize profit due to it's more limited audience on the specific platform.

That kind of attitude - only consoles deserve a disc - has me worried that gameplay will cater solely to the console crowd. Controls will probably be stupidly broken too. I miss the days of when Hitman was a PC-only game
