Heroes of Might and Magic V: Tribes of the East Hands-On
The orcs and their bastion allies are the center of this stand-alone expansion for Heroes of Might and Magic V.
Ubisoft and developer Nival Interactive will look to wrap up the Heroes of Might and Magic V saga with the release of the second expansion pack to last year's turn-based fantasy strategy game. Heroes of Might and Magic V: Tribes of the East, a stand-alone expansion that will not require you to own the original game, will let you explore a magical world with an army composed of heroes and fantasy units--only this time, you'll finally get a chance to play from the perspective of the brutish orcs.
The orcs actually are part of the new bastion faction, which includes other races such as goblins, centaurs, Cyclopes, and wyverns. According to Might and Magic history, the orcs were created to battle demons, and they, along with the other bastion races, were enslaved by their masters afterward. The story for Tribes of the East is that an orc hero named Quroq emerges to lead the bastion tribes out of captivity and to a new home, and if he has to wipe out everyone in his path to do so, so be it.
In the level that we played, Quroq has to go about liberating the various tribes in the Raven Duchy of the Griffin Empire. We didn't get a chance to see any bastion towns in the level, but there was still plenty to see and do on the world map. There are numerous encounters to be had, from battling various guardians protecting key structures or treasure hordes on the map to exploring various forks in the road and areas off the beaten path. You can burn and pillage farmsteads for experience points or gold, head to a temple or shrine for a buff or temporary bonus before a battle, recruit mercenaries at a camp, and more. Early on we encountered goblins slaving away under the watchful eyes of some peasants. You'll start with a handful of units, which you can use to defeat the peasants (they're really easy), and thus free the goblins. A large number of goblins will join your army, and you can recruit more at the goblin structure on the map. We also managed to free centaurs and Cyclopes from similar captivity, and those units joined our army, replenishing losses from each battle.
The turn-based combat system hasn't changed much, if at all, from Heroes of Might and Magic V. You can still arrange your units' starting positions on the grid before a battle, and once the action starts each unit moves in turn, with the unit order listed on a bar below. Heroes remain on the sidelines, though they can attack, cast spells, or use special abilities during their turn. While turn-based, battles are still very tense as you face tough opponents. We took hordes of weak skeletons and goblins into battle against knights, archers, and griffins, and we barely won. (A word of note: If you face griffins, focus on them immediately, because they can dash around the battlefield and decimate even large groups of weak units in a single blow.)
A key thing to keep in mind about the orcs is that they operate on the principle of blood rage. Orcs like to be on the attack. This means that they're happiest when battling the enemy. This is reflected mainly in their attack values. As long as a unit is attacking, its blood rage builds and its attack value increases over the fight. However, if the unit sits still for a round (perhaps you want the enemy to come to you), the blood rage cools and the attack value might dip. The orc heroes can aid in this with their blood rage spells, as they can temporarily boost the blood rage in various units, provided they have enough mana to cast the spell. We saw one orc unit go from an attack rating of 10 to 25 with blood rage cast on it.
Then there are sacrificial pits, which is a new feature in Tribes of the East. If you've played Heroes of Might and Magic, you know that you can often get hordes of weak, obsolete units in your army. These include peasants, skeletons, and anything else that comes in groups of hundreds. While they can be used for canon fodder on the battlefield, that's about all they're good for. No more. In Tribes of the East, if you need to generate some experience points in a hurry to level up a hero, or if you need a slight buff for your units before a big battle, head to a sacrificial pit and offer up your obsolete units. They'll die, but you'll get an experience-point boost as well as a temporary luck boost.
Tribes of the East will also introduce armor and weapon sets, which operate not unlike those found in many games, such as Diablo. There are various magical weapons and pieces of equipment, but if you manage to find all the pieces of a complete set, they become even more potent. For instance, the ogre club is a mighty weapon in its own right, and the ogre shield provides powerful defense. Equip both of them on a single hero and they unlock new powers and abilities. Armor and weapon sets should provide incentive to explore each and every corner of the map thoroughly.
If you're a fan of the existing factions in Heroes of Might and Magic V, Tribes of the East will introduce a new alternate upgrade for each existing unit in the game. Finally, Tribes of the East will also help tie into the overarching Might and Magic universe by featuring some characters from the action game Dark Messiah of Might and Magic. It should also close the book on the Heroes of Might and Magic V story, though that will probably open the door for a Heroes of Might and Magic VI. In any case, Tribes of the East looks like a solid expansion for fans of the series, and its stand-alone nature should make it a bit more accessible to those who want to jump in. It's scheduled to ship this September.
I just want to ask is there a mac version of Tribes of East.
i am Wondering where is the heroes of might and migic VI its 2009 now about an year and half and no sign of any news about it we want to play it really we still play HOMM V and it was awsome for me and we want the next game if anyone knows any news about it tells us
I totally agree with gedassan. There are various strenghts and weaknesses of this game, but saying that gameplay sucks is just not right. And also, 3d engine can only improve experience over the ridiculous graphics of HoMM3, and that is definitely not the only improvement over previous games.
for those who are interested releasing will chance probably, over september
Awesome, the faster we get this, the faster we get 6 in Directx 10!
It will be hard to be number 2...
sounds good
Looks cool, but I still don't think it will be as much fun as 3 or 4
and by to way, warcraft doesn't own orc rights.
pcgame_nerd1971,acej2000,Ahurigaan you are jerks. Why should be some freaking fighting heroes, who will die one hit? that was most gayest idea what ever made.It is not weird that why 3DO runned out of money, they made HeroesIV and what happened, they have to sold they rights for other game developers. For me,heroesV is best heroes game ever, but need still improvements
Give it up on V....COME ON. What happened to the fun in the early versions. How bout a little innovation vs just an odd 3D re-skin of the same game. Give us something new with VI and I'll be back...till then I'm with acej2000 and still playing 4.
If they make VI they really need to make some more strategy elements, give the game some more depth this isnt 1995 anymore.
I prefer 4, I play that more to this day than 5
Nothing new under the sun. They should make a new game with a different developer this is a dissapointment.
From the retired old lady high school teacher, my students got me involved in the Heroes games years ago and I just love them. So glad the series continued and look forward to more. Just finished the Heroes V and the Hammers of Fate. I love this games.
cool game
"an orc hero named Quroq emerges to lead the bastion tribes out of captivity and to a new home" Hmm That Sounds Familiar......Oh wait I Think thats Called Warcraft III where The Orc Hero Thrall saves his People from Captivity and Leads them to a New Home.Nival seems pretty lazy, couldnt they have at least come up with something new, even if it was just pulling something out of the Hat like: Two Orc brothers fight for the Throne of their People leading to a Grand Civil War between the Orcish Tribes, but no we get a Ripoff story of Warcraft III, HoMMV only had Good Graphics, Storyline and Gameply sucked, This almost caught my attention, but then i read the backstory, Ill just go purchase Warcraft III again much better game.
Kokuei, you can play cooperatively, but you need special maps for that. This is one of the areas the game needs to be improved, I agree. However, I really like a lot of the stuff that HOMM V brought to the table: 1. Primary and secondary skills 2. Balanced adventure magic (vessel of Shalassa, summon creatures, town portal etc) 3. Skills you need to achieve by careful hero development (retribution, guardian angel etc) 4. Town hero specialties (training, artificer etc) 5. Town specialty structures (training arena, artifact forge) 6. Some very nice creature skills such as the imperial gryphon battle dive. The features that the Tribes of the East is promising are also great. Return of a REAL barbarian faction and the alternative unit upgrades are the ones I am fond of. The game can still be made better. 1. AI turns last longer than in HOMM3; it doesn't look much smarter than in HOMM3, and the problems being solved are similar, so why the longer wait? 2. For HOMM VI, why not choose an art style where I don't have to turn the adventure screen around? It is annoying and disorienting, although there are some helper features implemented on the minimap. 3. There are just NOT enough maps for the game. Of all the maps there are, there are too few large maps that can be played cooperatively (allied maps). For the dwarven expansion, there are almost none. 4. It is not possible to set teams for the map, a feature that was brilliant in one of the HOMM3 games, I believe it was Armageddon Blade. So if you wanted, say, to play 2 against 4, you could do that. I am sure the AI is not able to handle that, though. So we are stuck with default map settings. Other than that, HOMM V could have been much, much worse. This is actually a fun, playable game. Don't care about the story so much, but it isn't bad, I have played through the haven campaign and playing inferno now. Ahurigaan, you are entitled to your opinion, but you only give arguments about the story, not the gameplay. I agree about the cliche story. However, saying that the gameplay sucked, you need to back that up in how it sucked, otherwise your comment looks pretty ignorant.
This franchise is one of the most amazing and addictive of all the history of pc games... is a classic and heroes V is a good sequel... this second expasion is looking very nice... I hope the game can finally feal finished in much aspects... this review is nice and give us hope for that :) Long Live Heroes Of Might And Magic =)
Heroes V, for anything else than the graphics improvements (which is totally normal and not unique in any way), is a big disappointment. First of all, multiplayer COOP mode doesn't exist. Why is that? However, they did do SOMETHING nice in the second expansion, which is to implement simultaneous turns for multiplayer games. Still, they fell short because the simultaneous mode ends as soon as you encounter another player's exploration zone. Ubisoft should really've looked more carefully at the previous games to try and capture the quality of these masterpieces (except the IV, but need I say so?). And to see that the only improvements in this standalone expansion are database wise, this really is another one of the pitiful works by Ubisoft. Without the Heroes of Might and Magic game, this title would not sell. Guess it's another game that I'll just download via BitTorrent to play 1 or 2 neverending all-nighters with one of my friends while smoking shisha.
well for me heroes 5 means nothing, heroes 2 and 3 was grates game off all so 3DO rocks those ubisoft they don`t know nothing about this tipe of game only the graphics are cool but i dont play games only for graphics they ruin the history of heroes of might and magic ubisoft should stay on they`r tipe of games like for 3-5 years old kids this was to hard for them.
Oh yeah... Another exp With a good art & good stories this game will rocks ! I hope this game will come soon ! Hm... better with working cheat codes too
Well, isn't that great? Another expansion, another city! Also very fond of second unit upgrades. Niiiice!
wooh i thought hammers of fate will end this season
i just want the new creatures to play multiplayer with my friends...... The story was really sucky in heroes five not worthy the coolness that was the story in heroes four.
I'd be looking forward to it if the story in Heroes 5 didn't disappoint me beyond belief -.-
I'd like to see both stand-alone and addition to existing game if you have it so that I won't have to run different executables.
I'm a really big HEroes fan & NIVAL & UBI did a great job bringing the francise up again ! I'm really looking foreword for this !
