Hellboy: The Science of Evil Hands-On

We venture into Romanian graveyards to smash everything in sight with our giant, red fist.

Last night, we had the opportunity to attend Konami's Gamer's Night event here in San Francisco. After focusing on the big guns during its opening presentation, Konami gave us the chance to play a number of other upcoming games. Among the selection was Hellboy: The Science of Evil, a tie-in to the upcoming Hellboy film sequel subtitled The Golden Army. Scheduled for release June 24 on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PSP, this brawler features a stylized look reminiscent of the graphic novel and a combat system where the line between enemies and weapons is often blurred.

We jumped right into the first level of the game. This one takes place in a graveyard tucked away in the Carpathian Mountains of Romania. In terms of story, those incorrigible Nazis have once again hatched a plan to take over the world. The opening cutscene is a bit vague as to how these graves relate to the latest Nazi quest for world domination, but nevertheless, you are Hellboy--and you've got a giant fist made of stone ready to smash things.

This introductory level is filled with little gremlinlike enemies called bambinis. When it comes to these little guys, you have a few options for how to best deal with them. You've got a light attack button, a heavy attack button, and a gun that can be fired with one of the triggers. It's also possible to link your attacks together, as the combo ticker that pops up on the screen during a fight would suggest.

You can also make use of the game's contextual grapple system. What this means is that you can hit one of the triggers to grab small enemies and use them as unwilling projectiles. You can grab a bambini to throw at groups of other bambinis, which works quite well and is often very amusing, but you can also throw them at the cursed graves from which these little monsters emerge. Doing this a couple of times will demolish the cursed grave, stemming the flow of annoying little critters while allowing you to collect whatever loot lies at the bottom of the graves. These finds seem to be mostly of the ammo variety, with bullets and frag grenades being the most common loot.

The contextual grab is also used to progress through the graveyard's various sectioned-off areas. You'll often run into an area devoid of enemies unsure of what to do next, in which case, you'll need to go searching for a stone door or wall that appears to be in less than ideal condition. If you find one that's weak enough, you can press the grapple button to grab it and then repeatedly whack on the circle or X button (X on a 360 controller, mind you) to smash the living daylights out of it, allowing you to move on to the next area. Grabbing things and smashing them is a common theme in the game, if our time with this first level is to be believed.

Visually, Hellboy is looking quite nice, regardless of the platform. Rather than opting for a photorealistic look to mimic the film, The Science of Evil appears as though it will bridge the gap between the movie and graphic novel with a look that's a touch on the cartoony side but not quite ripped from the comics. In the interest of comparisons, the PS3 version looked a bit better, though it was hardly a massive difference. The PSP version obviously lags behind its console brethren, but much of that is offset by excellent graphic novel cutscenes interspersed throughout this portable version.

We're eager to see how Hellboy's repertoire of combat techniques evolves past this first level. The beginning of the game was a bit limited in terms of what Hellboy could do, but those few moves were pretty fun. As mentioned before, Hellboy is scheduled for release on June 24.

Duh. Tried Hellboy. Its absolutely terrible compared to the other decent games out there. Graphics are bad. Controls are nothing near GoW and enemies are kinda retarded. Oh well. Its my opinion.

I freaking love Hellboy, and if, in general, if this game gets a 7-8, I would probably pick it up. I mean, GS gave Monster Hunter Freedom 2, which is one of my favorites, a 5 out of 10. So, it just goes to show, Game reviewers aren't always right, although I do somewhat trust GS.

I'm disappointed in you Konami. You went from making a instant class (Metal Gear series) to making this??? I'm a big fan of Hell Boy so much that I jumped out my seat when I seen the new previews for the new movie. But this game will do nothing for me as a fan of gaming or the comic. The gameplay looks so repeitive, there nothing inovated about what you do in the game. This game is the same as those old dragon ball games from the past.. The gameplay suck but people bought them because they were die hard fan.

You know devinbroncs123, even though you probably won't read this thread again, I realized today why I still have an account here - to silence fools like you.

Hellboy isn't going to be anything ground breaking, no pun intended. It may not win any awards and may not even sell that well. The one thing it will do is fuel the growth of the hobby we all know and love as video games.

If everyone only played "A" rated games as you call them, we would still be living in a world where the video game players club would be a very exclusive one. Sure, I know you aren't saying everyone should only play A rated games, and maybe you only think this game will suck. What you're really saying without even knowing it is that without games that don't sell well but appeal greatly to fans of a series or particular gaming style, don't do jack for the industry. Well your wrong.

If it wasn't for the crappy Batman games, Dragon Ball Z games, Final Fantasy VII spin offs, and hundreds of other franchise cross over media games, I wouldn't be the person I am today - an almost daily gamer. I play a game almost every day, and always seek out new ones and this process usually opens me up to a whole new world of interests as well as broadening my personality.

So give the series, the fans and the creators a break. Hellboy deserves it, because the content is paying it's tribute to the fans, whether it's simply another way to cash in for those people, or not. Better yet, it's bringing in more and more people that may not normally be drawn to the gaming world. That's my point. The only way these "A" rated games you've mentioned got their fame was by starting small. Activision? EA? Well Activision isn't too bad, but I dare you to compare any Battlefield to the Call of Duty series. I can't remember the last time my bazooka's explosion killed a guy on the other side of a wall in CoD. Or random floating for that matter. EA doesn't support the fans, or the industry. They only support their conglomerate.

Putting out crappy games means one of two things. You either have the guts and the care to put out a game for the crowd you know will enjoy the hell out of it, or you suck at making games and want money. Find out the truth of the game you buy before you buy it and I guarantee you, you'll never be disappointed.

So this game may bomb, but at least it's helping games you DO want that will bomb be released, because I can't tell you enough, I'm dieing for that next Batman or DBZ game.

The way I see it, you are on one side or the other for this game

    1) Hellboy could have been great, and the game will make up for what the movie lacked. The game's fighting system will be strange, repetitive, but fun.
    2) The movie sucked, the game can't be much better, and this review just strengthened my opinion on why this game will fail

This game officially looks to be one of the dumbest games to come out in 2008. Nickelarcade had a good comment. Don't buy it, so they don't make anymore and they spend their money on games that count. I bet the resale value, one week after it's purchased, is next to nothing. Play an A rated game, like COD4, Battlefield Baad Company, or even God of War (that's an awesome brawler). Not some stupid game based off of a good movie. I bet money it's diapoints the masses. Have fun!
