At first glance many gamers would simply pass this game by as another cheap shovelware game, and this is because this game has many things going against it. The first is the cover art, which looks like it could be a children's Saturday Morning Cartoon. The second thing would have to be the case. Heavenly Guardian come in the generic white case. The third and final thing would have to be the price of the game (I bought mine new at GameStop for $9.99). Like the old saying goes "Don't judge a book by it cover" and rightfully so, because inside the flimsy case lays a decent 2d shooter.

Heavenly Guardian started out as the sequel to Pocky & Rocky, but Starfish lost the license to make the sequel when Taito was bought out by Square Enix.

There's two different stories for the single player and two games. The single player game's story is about the snow goddess Sayuki must find the ingredient to make a cure for a boy she loves in the local village who has a curse on him. The two player game's story is about Sayuki and her younger sister are in a contest to see who can kill the most ghost and collect the most snowballs. While the stories are different the game play is the same.

While the has a great 16-bit-esque it does seem a bit dated to be on the Wii. Even with the 16-bit-esque graphics Heavenly Guardian dose manage to have 100+ enemies on the screen at the same time. The character and enemy sprites are very detailed and colorful. Just like the graphics, Heavenly Guardian sounds just like a 16-bit game, and it even manages to have the same sound effect from Sonic the Hedgehog when you kill enemies (only in the 1st level of the HG).

You use the nunchuck's analog stick to move your character around and you shoot with the "B" button, and you shake you Wii-mote in any direction that you want to blow icy wind too. There is another mode that allow you to control the movement of your character with that analog stick and use the IR to shoot in the direction in front of you. The only problem with that made is in a hurry to move up and down you can activate the icy wind. Besides the accidental icy winds the motion controls work well and work every time you attempt it.

Heavenly Guardian is pretty tough and you will get you butt handed to you a few times, but any retro gamer might find the game easy. Like any other shooter this game has its share of power-ups (3-way, homing, bomb, and rapid). The power ups also has power up system, and this is how it works: If you get the yellow crystal (3 way) you have level 1 3 way and every time you get another crystal of the same color it goes up a level (max is 5), but if you get a crystal of another color it changes your power up but it stays at the same level until you collect another crystal of the same color.

Heavenly Guardian doesn't have a save feature, but the game can be beat within a few hours. If your into retro gaming you should give this game a shoot, and it's a budget title so it won't cost you a lot.
