Nothing brand new under the sun, but nontheless a very good arena-FPS with nice ambientation.

User Rating: 8.5 | HAWKEN PC
First of all, don't expect something brilliant new with Hawken. In fact it's pretty similar to other arena FPS, but with mechs. The first game that comes to mind is Quake III Arena, but with Mastery Trees and some player customizations. Aside from that, the game is pretty fun. The mech-futuristic ambientation is pretty well done, something you can see that comes directly from the concept arts of the game. The game is not hard to play at all if you've played other arena FPS in the past. Despite being a fast peaced game, it has essentially the same rhythm as Quake III or other similar games. The big difference about this game is the motivation to make your mech better, something you can only do by playing frequently. In fact, I'm grateful of the play-to-win system, because even if you pay to customize your mech, you can see that this doesn't change radically the outcome of the matches. There are 4 types of game types: solo deathmatch, team deathmatch, team control point capture and last but not least, a "siege" game. The first two types are kind of standard. The control point capture is based on 3 missile silos, which fire to the base of the contrary team, depending on which team has control over it. The siege games is a little more complex. You and your team must harvest energy from two places in the side extremes in the center of the map. The energy is used to "build" a battleship, which as in the control point capture game, fires to the contrary team base. The team attacked can fire to the ship either with their guns, or by controlling a anti-air cannon in the center of the map. In the last two type of games loses the team which base "health" reaches 0.

The mechs are of three classes: light, medium and heavy. Every mech has their pros and cons, so it depends much on your play style. The CRT-Recruit, the first mech you receive, is a pretty good medium mech, and many will master this first free mech instead of buying a new one. You improve by buying pieces and with the mastery trees. The mastery trees can only be lvled by winning points with experience, and the pieces can be bought either with meteor (cash) or hawken (earned every game) points.

You must consider the game is still in beta, so many thing will probably change, but taking into account what's already in the game, it's pretty good and fun; it deserves that you test it and make your own opinion about it.
