Haunting Ground has a good concept, but in the end it just falls flat.

Haunting is a survivor horror game made by Capcom which was released in early 2005. Having competition from other series such as Silent Hill and Fatal Frame, Capcom decided to make a new horror based game other than Resident Evil. HG is what we can call "true survival horror" since in these games your abilities, items, resources, etc. are very limited and they are.

In this game you are an 18-year-old college student named Fiona Belli who is the only survivor of a car accident that claimed the life of both of her parents and who mysteriously wakes up in castle with strange inhabitants, puzzles, and weird enemies. Your objective: to get out of the castle alive before any of the residents kill you and get something you don't know you have. Don't ask what because you, as the player, need to discover this on your own. Hell yeah, what did you expect?

In any way, you could say this game is divided by enemies, which will start to hunt you once you beat the one before until you get to the main boss. Besides Fiona, there is another playable character: Hewie. Who's Hewie you might ask? Well he's a dog, yeah a dog and let me tell you this: Hewie is ten times better than Fiona. Fiona can only throw crystals and give a very, very weak kick and some other useless actions. Hewie, however, can bite, grab items Fiona can't and many more actions that comes in handy. As the owner, it is important for you to establish a relationship with your dog. That is a key element in the game once you get to the final boss, believe me.

The graphics are nice, just nice, not amazingly good. The sound is ok and the tunes you come across later in the game might really scare you but they feel very repetitive. The replay value here is somewhat good. You can get four different endings depending on your actions you made in the game and your relationship with Hewie. That's a good thing because the endings vary from great to bad yet I doubt you'd like to play all the game again just to see the different endings. In the end, Haunting Ground had potential but all these aspects such as a weak protagonist, several AI problems and occasional frighting moments made the game average with nothing new to the genre.
