Harms Way is a simple game, but it's enjoyable in both single and multiplayer and it won't cost you a dime

When you download a free game off of Xbox Live, or anywhere, you probably don't expect too much, just a simple game that will keep you busy for an hour or so. You especially wouldn't expect much from an ad game like Yaris or Dash of Destruction. Well, now comes along quite possibly the best free ad game on the Xbox Live Arcade, Harms Way. Although it is still a bit simple, there's no arguing the price of $0.00 or how enjoyable this game can be.

There's no story, but the premise of the game is split into two types of players; the racer and the shooter. As a racer, you get to choose one of 4 vehicles such as the truck, pick up, buggy or bus, all with their own unique stats. Your goal is to, of course, win the race but you must avoid the turret fire and avoid blowing up. The racers don't have weapons to fire at each other but you can pick up some extra boost laying on the track or you can earn it by drifting. There are also shields and turret upgrades/downgrades (can either give the turrets an extra weapon or take one away) to pick up along the track. The races can be intense and the vehicles control great (except for maybe the bus, which has terrible handling).

The shooter's job is to earn more points than the other turrets but shooting at the racers. The shooter is set in a first person view and they can switch between turrets to get a better view of the drivers as the race goes on. That, or you can kill another shooter and take his turret. You start with a sniper rifle but with the power of the turret upgrade items on the track, you can also be given a machine gun, rocket launcher, or land mines. Each weapon is good for different strategies, like using the sniper to get an instant kill (on the windshield). If you really want to mess the drivers up, the shooter can also shoot at certain rocks or other areas on the track. This will block off a short cut and force the racers to take the long way around, giving you more time to shoot them.

As for the tracks, I'm quite surprised at how well-designed they are. They are all set in a desert region but each one is uniquely designed with plenty of jumps, turns and short cuts. However, the only problem is there are only 3 tracks in the whole game which really lowers the replay value. The single player has two modes for these tracks; campaign and level select. There's little to no point to the campaign, because whether your a driver or a shooter, it's just playing all 3 tracks in a row. No reward, no progression, no nothing. It's the same thing as playing all 3 levels in a row in level select.

Due to lack of options and possibly challenge, the single player won't last you too terribly long. On the other hand, there's more reason to play multiplayer. Up to 8 players can play online or off. All 8 players are split up into 4 teams of 2, one player is the shooter and the other is the driver. Together, you and your teammate must work together. The shooter must blow up his teammate's competition while the driver must win the race while avoiding enemy fire himself. The other mode is more of a free for all, the racers compete against each other to win the race while the shooters compete for the most points.....by blowing up the drivers. Both multiplayer modes are fun and intense, online or off, but you'd be better off telling your friends to download this too because nobody is playing this online.

Spite only having 3 tracks and a limited amount of options, Harms Way is an enjoyable and intense racing game for single and multiplayer, whether you prefer shooting or driving. Granted, once you play all 3 tracks in single player, there isn't much reason to continue playing but playing multiplayer is a blast spite there being nobody online. I would recommend this game to anyone, it is free after all.
