We met up with Sony last Friday to get a preview of the upcoming Firmware 2.40 update for the PlayStation 3. Eric Lempel, Sony director of PlayStation Network Operations, gave us a quick tour of the new firmware features.

Yes, it's true. Firmware 2.40 has in-game XMB support.

Adjust settings in-game.

Eric fired up a game of Pixel Junk Monsters and pulled up the XMB menu right in the middle of the game. Not all of the XMB options will be available in game, but most of it is there including the all-important friend features.

In-game messaging

The XMB will warn you if you're about to perform an action that will cause you to leave the game such as launching a video.

XMB warning

Developers will also have the option to allow players to play music saved on the hard disk in game. However, you won't be able to stream background music direct from a USB device.

In-game XMB music panel

The other major addition in 2.40 is a new trophy system, Sony's answer to Microsoft's achievement points. PS3 games will have bronze, silver, gold, and platinum level "trophies" that players can earn by reaching pre-determined milestones within the game.

It's up to the game developers to determine the goals, so don't be surprised if some of the trophy requirements overlap with Xbox 360 achievements in multiplatform games. Developers have the option to add trophy support to games that have already shipped, but Sony isn't making it mandatory.

Trophy tiers

Platinum level trophies are only available in "large" games, basically full games that ship in Blu-ray form. Smaller games, downloadables and add-ons, will only have lower level trophies. Each large game will only have one platinum trophy, which you can only earn by unlocking all of the other trophies in the game. Sony wanted to give players a special reward for reaching 100 percent completion.

Leveling system

Your trophy count will feed into a player leveling system that will increase your level as you earn more trophies. The trophy system only exists in 2D at this point, but all of the information will be available for use when Sony launches its 3D Home service later this year.

Trophy comparison

You can compare trophy counts with friends, and even get down to the game level where you can compare the exact date and time each of you won particular trophies. Your player profile will also display your Online ID, an About Me section, and the languages you speak (to let other players know if communication is going to be a problem).

Profile card

Other new features include an "Internet Search" tool that instantly launches a text search box that returns Google results.

Internet search input box

That's it for our PS3 Firmware 2.40 preview. You'll be able to try it for yourself when Sony rolls out the download later this week on July 2.

You have to admit that pretty much everything (bar the search box thing) are all things xbox had from the start and PS3 really should have had. Too slow Sony...

The in-game XMB should have been there from the start. Good to see them finally implement it.

Has anyone got a firm date on the 2.40 release then? It WAS on 3rd July but now postponed due to installation problems, just wondering whether they are going to schedule it for the 10th July, the same day as the Burnout update?

[Ah yeah, for a) everyone asking how to update to 2.40 and b) all those warning everyone NOT to install it... it was WITHDRAWN A FEW HOURS AFTER RELEASE and so a) ISN'T AVAILABLE and therefore b) CAN'T BE INSTALLED... why fill up the comment board with stupid questions and redundant answers?]

Current list of games with trophies support:

    http://www.fragland.net/news/First-list-of-PS3-games-with-trophy-support/19303/

Does PS3 online have private 1-on-1 chat like xboxlive? If not, that's def something they need to add in a future patch too.

Some people have a closed Beta of home- probably sony staff and some other lucky people.
2.40 was really disappointing. Sure, you can pull up the XMB. But you can't do anything in it! You can't look at photos, listen to music, watch videos, open other games, browse the internet, anything!

There may be trophies, but there are no games which actually support them yet.

As for internet search, it would be handy if it could be opened in game, check something for the game you're playing, but it would be much easier to walk to the computer than quit your game and check.

All in all, a pretty useless update.

Oh my God, are you guys idiots! They added the ability for custom soundtracks, yes, but it's still dev. specific. It's like the original XBOX where the developer choses whether they want their game to have custom soundtracks. All game that were released before depend on whether the developer gives us an update to the game for in-game soundtracks. Just wait. I mean, he even said no game will support it at launch! Wait until devs decide to give us updates to the softwear and until games release where devs decide to include it. I do think it was a stupid decision for sony to do that, because I don't think any devs are going to put in updates for released games, which would suck, but at least we have the chance. I wish they went the 360 rout, though.

I have been barking about the PS3's lack of gamer-card and achievements since day one, but now that they took a very, very simple idea and twisted it into the whole Trophy thing, I can't help but feel that I should of kept my mouth shut.[p]
Achievements, . . . a very simple idea that allows EVERYONE, no matter what their skill level, to add replay value and compare the FINAL point number with friends, which is more about the number of games you play, not how good you are, which IMHO is great because this allows the crappy player to have as much fun as the super (too serious) pro player in your not showing the world that for the most part, that you suck.
I would say 95% of all gamers are horrible and now by showing everyone that they can't clinch a platinum or gold trophy, they can show the rest of the world just how much they suck too, leaving them open to getting blasted on the forums by hordes of cruel kids that are head shot champions. . . So nice job Sony, way to take someone else's idea and twist it into a trophy system that only really benefits the seasoned player. Remember Sony, you are trying to attract people to the PS3, not make them self conscious about their lack of skills. . . I am also a bit more sour today too because the newest update has messed with my machine to the point where I finally think I'm gonna have to send it in, so I'm a bit aggravated.

The 2.40 update really looks nice. But you cant play your own music behind every game. As an example GTA IV.

I would like to mention that I liked the video review. Every feature is treated.

Hmmm... sound like lotsa problem occur with many different ppl around. Have we ever wondered, could it be because of the different batches of PS3 we own?(though it might not be so true, afterall everyone is running the same firmware 2.36 before we upgrade to 2.4)

The only problem i face is that when I am looking at my own profile. When I press 'O' it returns with an error. And it is only the 3rd time when i press it, it works normal. It occurs every time i tried to view it.

PS3 owner.....Seriously did anyone read the intel on this update?! This is a botched attempt at giving us what we want! There are no games released to allow the in game XMB really do much. Specially playing any ps1 or ps2 games and even most ps3 games dont support much of the new features, we gonna have to wait till the game devs patch the games!!!!! WTH!!! The ingame music thing will only be evailable once the game devs make it so. Check the video and listen. No ps2 or ps1 compatablility to be said at this time..... Gimme a break!

ShadowofKratos there's a thread in Gamespot which has some link from joystiq news article stating that Sony has removed the update from its servers. Some people were having difficulties booting up their Ps3s so they did that! I am not sure when they're gonna get it back on... but for now, its uncertain!
So much for update 2.40 ... I waited for it for so long and didn't even get a taste of it! don't worry man... I'm on the same boat!

Amazing. The PS3 is really starting to shine now that games are filling 50GB Blu-ray disks when even a dual layer DVD still can't hold nearly that. MGS4 and other games are really showing what the PS3 can do performance wise, and now with this update the features of the system are becoming more useful, easier to use, and more fun. Great job Sony, never doubted you.

I was waiting for this now I got it, use it and I like it. Updates like this one for in game XMB were needed. The other stuff is just gravy to a great update. I was running out of patience, having to exit a game to check a message but this came just in time. I'm playing too much MGO right now to check out the other stuff. Maybe in a couple of months after I cut back on the amount of hours I spend with MGO will I check out the other stuff. I don't need trophies to keep having fun and I play the game with the music off. I have to hear my teammates and my hearing already sucks.
