User Rating: 9.6 | Halo 2 XBOX
The Halo franchise was exactly what the X-Box needed to cement itself as a viable system. You could almost sell the console on that game alone. I for one am one of the financially inept and will postpone buying a 360 until Halo 3 makes its rounds here in the US. I'm sure that Microsoft will be pulling in the big bucks that day as well. While I did spend the better part of a year awaiting the debut of Halo 2, like many of us here on Gamespot, my experience goes something like this: November 9th, 2004 - My high school's senior class trip was to New York City (boring, the rival school's was to the bahamas!). They wanted us to pay $125 for dinner, bus, and a hotel room for the night. Being the poor Jew I am, I had a better idea. I convinced 2 of my best friends to go along with me and have our own trip to the big apple that same day courtesy of New Jersey transit. I convinced my mom to give us a ride from Philly to the train station in Trenton the morning of our senior trip. Instead of paying $125 for a greyhound bus ride that would have take 3+ hours to get to New York at 6 O'clock in the evening, we opnly paid $7 for a train ticket to Penn Station at 6 O'Clock in the morning! Take that Philadelphia public schools! To make a long story short, we spent the entire day there for a fraction of the proce, and even met up with our classmates later to gloat about it. The second half of the day, we wound up in Times Square and right smack in front of my face was a gigantic wall scroll ad featuring the Master Chief. I stared at it the entire time knowing that once I got home, there would be a copy of Halo 2 sitting in my living room. I stared when we were crossing the busy streets to the ESPN Zone. I stared when we waited inside of the Toys R Us. I stared when we sat in Bubba Gumps waiting for our waiter to bring us our dinner. By the time I got home, I hadn't slpet in 18 hours. I B-Lined right to the X-Box, while my friends crashed on my sofa. My one friend described it as this: "When I went to bed he was playing, almost fixated on the screen. And when I woke up the next morning, there he was in the same spot and the credits were rolling." I played all night. Was I dissapointed with the game's seemingly abrupt ending? At first, yes. Then 5 minutes later I only realized how much I wanted to play Halo 3, and I appreciated the savvy cliffhanger ending that the boys from Bungie implemented. Halo 2 is the second act, our hero is in distress and the entire story is about to be blown into a huge climatic finale! I replayed the game about 30 times. If you don't own it by now.. you're an idiot.
