Content omissions aside, this is a solid representation of one this generation's best RPGs.

User Rating: 7 | Half-Minute Hero: Super Mega Neo Climax X360
One of my favourite commute games for last year was an interesting RPG called Half-Minute Hero on the PSP. Its greatness came from the unique premise of condensing a massive RPG adventure into bite size form. Microsoft took note of the game's popularity and commissioned the development of a HD port for its Xbox Live Arcade service with the added subtitle of Super Mega Neo Climax. If you don't get the intended pun, it means you have never played Street Fighter.

The story of Half-Minute Hero spans a massive timeline that is seen through the eyes of four different characters. But instead of giving players a traditional plot loaded with serious themes, the developers have opted to fill Half-Minute Hero with humorous yet well written dialogue that parodies all the clinches that the RPG genre is known for.

Another convention that the game rebels against is the lengthy time it takes to master an RPG. On average players can spend 20 or more hours grinding their way to the finish. But in Half-Minute Hero you only have 30 seconds to prevent evil forces from destroying the world in 62 standalone adventures. Within the given time you must level up, talk to people, buy new gear and reach the villain's lair. Of course not all of this can be achieved within such a small time limit, which is why with a small payment you can reset the time limit. Admittedly this isn't a very deep game and don't be surprised if things become a bit repetitive. But when you experience the speedy game play and frantic time management, that's when you fall in love with Half-Minute Hero.

Unfortunately this new and "supposably" improved version of the game is somewhat cut. In the original PSP version each of the four characters had their own unique style of game play, which would help mix things up. However in Super Mega Neo Climax they all now play identically and if that wasn't enough more than half of the adventures have been removed completely. These cuts necessarily doesn't ruin the game, but they take away a part of what made it so great in the first place.

As for the presentation, the blocky 8-bit graphics used in the original PSP version have been swapped out for new detailed artwork that is more suitable for a HD TV. If you prefer the retro style of the PSP version there's a handy option on the main menu that will revert the game to its original presentation. Although regardless of which graphics you do choose, you will still hear the same wonderful upbeat soundtrack.

Fans of the original version will undoubtedly find the content omissions to be upsetting. But if you are without a PSP (shame on you) and own an Xbox 360, Half-Minute Hero: Super Mega Neo Climax is not a bad way to experience this future gaming classic. Just be prepared to play it in small doses if you wish avoid repetition.
