Half Life is the best first person shooter out there, followed by Halo.

User Rating: 8 | Half-Life PC

The best part of playing a first person shooter is to actually play the game itself rather than have all those collectibles and a 100 upgrades that are hidden in corners for you to discover. The game means business; It doesn't ask you to do silly task and takes itself really seriously when it puts you in the shoes of Gordon Freeman as he canvasses the entire scientific complex to look for the anomalies that reside inside and kill it.

Half Life is brilliant in terms of game play, smart AI, weapons, ammo structuring and health packages. There is nothing that seems out of place or fake. The difficulty is perfect and many a times you will pace yourself trying to outrun the smart AI that chases you through corridors. The monstrous organic enemies to smaller crab life creatures are all dangerous if left unnoticed for even a bit. The puzzles in the game are smart and not tedious. The game bosses also feel right in place with neither object nor AI being placed in a certain place just for the heck of it. Towards the end of game, there's a severe shortage of ammo and health charge stations.
