Hades

Hades is a roguelike game, which is not my kind of game. I ended up playing it for quite a while anyway (probably 10-15 hours) because it was everyone's consensus for game of the year last year. While I liked it, I'm just never going to like roguelike games.

The combat is fluid and fun; you get upgrades (or boons) that are different each run, and sometimes you get to choose which type of boon to get (each Greek God gives you different stuff). You go through procedurally generated levels and defeat enemies, progressing towards each boss encounter. I ended up getting to the boss where there is a minotaur and some other guy that just kept kicking my butt. I never beat him.

The graphics and music are where it's at in this game. It's absolutely gorgeous, and the soundtrack and voice acting is top notch. I really enjoyed getting to know the different Gods in the game. You bring back some items with you each time you die, and you can give gifts and spend jewels that provide permanent upgrades to your character, so that you can get further than before each time.

Unfortunately, for me, fighting the same enemies and the same bosses over and over and over again just isn't my kind of game. I really don't enjoy games where I die constantly, and especially when I have to re-tread over what I just did before dying. This game doesn't just take you to the beginning of the level, it literally makes you replay the entire game from the beginning each time. Not my thing, but I can see why this is a popular game and people love it.
