Same elements, same flaws, same old, same old...

User Rating: 6.5 | .hack//Mutation Part 2 PS2
For newcomers of the series who haven't heard of the previous game, this is a simulated MMORPG, which means that it tries its best to imitate the experince associated with playing a game online with actual people, but the results are terrible at best. For those of you who've played the previous game and were smart enough to save a data flag, you can pick up that save right where you left off and have all the equipment, experience, and items you had at the end of the first game.

The second installment of the series is just the same as the previous game, and that's where it falls flat on its face. Nothing is improved, but on the plus side, nothing is downgraded. You have a few more bosses to fight and new areas to go, but this is only for either fans of the anime series or for those who were hooked on the story and want to find out how it ends. Sadly, you won't find the ending here, but you'll advance at a faster pace than the previous game.

The story is that you have defeated 1 of the 8 bosses you need to destroy to be able to return everything to normal. You meet some new allies along the way as well as go to some new areas and fight new enemies. You find yourself on the verge of being deleted by the administrator, but you then have to cooperate with him to destroy the other 7 left.

Now, the graphics are the same, and I mean it. Absolutely nothing has improved and I call this a copy-and-paste effort. You have the exact same environments to go around in, with the exception of a few. You have new weapons and enemies, but that's not saying much as the only difference you can find is the difference in size and color. The graphics are bland and are slipping deeper into the black hole that is bland game design. The townspeople are exactly the same, right down to the name. The developers could've added a few new NPCs to the mix, but apparently they spent the money on other things.

The gameplay is also the same, with the exception of a handful of new abilities, such as draining from multiple enemies and some new spells and equipment. At its core though, its the exact same game, but with a different plot. You move and interact the exact same way and nothing has change the slightest, which means that you don't have to spend time learning new controls, but you have to force yourself to carry on with the same repetitive tasks until your thumbs bleed. This is the worst and the most frustrating part of the game as it wears your patience down to the point of madness. Some things are slightly changed, such as the menu backgrounds and music, but this falls far too short to redeem the more serious flaws of the title.

Overall, with absolutely nothing new to add except for some new plot elements and equipment, it's hard to reccomend this game to anyone who isn't a fan of the series or is dying to find out the end. People who haven't played the game up to this point shouldn't bother as they'll save more time to do other things which are actually productive. If you want to find the ending, rent this game, if you're a fan of the anime series, chances are you've already bought this game.
