So I played through again on Expert (the most fun way of course ) and decided to try a little challenge of that I have to change weapon whenever I get the opportunity (If the item grabber drops only the same weapons then i pressed A to turn one orb off/on) it turned out quite challenging, fighting some of the later bosses with random weapons that aren't so good for them is pretty tough.

Also the spaceship level on Expert is absolute hell without the lightsaber (Fire/Lightning) to destroy bullets, there were bullets everywhere. I wonder where treasure got the inspiration for their super tough Radiant Silvergun and Ikaruga from..

Homing Flame also works decently for clearing bullets, although it's more helpful with 2 players so that one person can use a more 'standard' weapon to damage stuff with. Otherwise yeah, in Expert I usually cheap out and use either Force + Flame for the damage of the explosive shots or lightsaber and play defensively.

The whole 'you have to change weapons when you see new weapons' sounds fun, will try that next.

Have you ever tried the Japanese-only Game Gear port? I remember seeing a copy for super cheap in a dollar store years ago (I have no idea why the dollar store had a sale of cheap Game Gear games including Japanese imports but I saw it and couldn't resist, it looked cool). The ship level's been replaced with a super-lame level where you just ride in one of those giant mechanical walkers and shoot lasers constantly in a long corridor (right before the core fight). Still, seeing the changes is interesting, and it's a good port considering the much less powerful hardware (and you don't need to know Japanese to play it) compared to something awful like the Streets of Rage 1 Game Gear port (nearly unplayable IMO).

I've always been terrible with Chaser Flame, I can never control it and survive at the same time. Force + Flame is a very nice weapon especially against the final boss. It's interesting how single Chaser is more powerful than double though, not counting the slower fire rate.

There's a few weapons that I can't see how anyone can use though such as double Laser, it's absolutely horrible!

With the changing weapons thing the boss rush stage can be a complete nightmare if you get the wrong weapons though.

I've never played the Gamegear version tbh, I may go check it out now seeing as you mentioned it though.

I can't even get through this game on expert o_0
For the easier settings, I use chaser laser. Its really weak, but its fun to see that laser flying all over the screen killing stuff.

What part are you having trouble with? Expert's certainly hard (the spaceship segment in particular) but the lightsaber and grenades still tear through everything. That, and throwing enemies when possible (like Orange, etc, who take more damage from being thrown into a solid object than being thrown offscreen). Remember you can always guard (in on-foot stages) if there's an attack that you find hard to dodge (hold attack + jump at same time when on ground to cover your face).

You have to remember on Expert that the Chaser weapons are all much weaker than on the other difficulties so you'll most likely have to survive the onslaught much longer if you use only a Chaser + something weapon, i'm quite fond of Double Force and Double Flame personally. Fire + Lightning is definitely the way to go for the spaceship stage though.

Heh, i'm not sure i'd suggest throwing Orange (especially not the second time you face him o.o) he always seems to do that explosion move and take off a ton of life, guess i don't have the hang of throwing him. Smash Daisaku at the end of the 5th stage though if you jump near him he'll do that stretchy leg kick thing and you can catch him on the way down for an almost risk free throw.

Yeah, the spaceship level is very hard without fire + laser and it forces me to die many times until I get the proper combination. Without it, I stick to double force, I think it works well. Great game, Treasure sure knows how to deliver classics.
