I just started playing the game yesterday and it's quite good. I understand that the Saturn went largely unappreciated in the US, but that doesn't mean that no one looks back at this game fondly.
Compared to other Saturn 3D Mech games, this one stands out pretty nicely. It's controls make up for the lack of dual analog sticks in a way that I think is ultimately more effective than the controls in the Gundam Blue Destiny games.
I have yet to play the MechWarrior release on the Saturn, but after playing this, I think I will.

What do you mean Facebook's not a game? Why can I play it on my 360 then?

GunGriffon is always one of my recommendations when people ask about affordable Saturn games. It's so fast-paced it almost feels more like a fps than a mech-sim.
It's import sequel is pretty much more of the same stuff, but sports slightly improved graphics and an sadistically increased difficulty level. It's also pretty cheap by saturn-import standards.

I'm actually playing the Japanese version of GunGriffon 1 on my Japanese Sega Saturn right now. I might pick up GG2 at some point, but I already have trouble with some of the missions in GG1, so I'm hesitant to import the second one and get my arse handed to me even harder, ha.
I might pick up a 3D controller and see if that helps me at all. Most missions I can handle, and I haven't really had a chance to just sit down and figure out what I'm doing wrong, but there are some missions that just seem damn difficult. It's helped since I've gotten more used to using the L button to turn my torso and avoid fire that way in open areas, but there are still times when something else will prevent me from getting things done.
I'm pretty sure that the allied helicopters are supposed to help me some how, but I can't figure out what they do, or what I'm supposed to do with them.

When your support chopper lands, you get right next to it and hold still for second. You'll hear this clank and your weapons will start getting reloaded. Actually it's the only way to really stock up on the cluster bomb-type weapon that's so much fun.
And I really don't like the way the 3d controller feels with either of the GG games. Very innovative controller, but there's few games on the system that take advantage of it.

Thanks for the tip about the chopper! I haven't actually had time to play the game in a bit, but when I do, now I know how to get restocked! I find myself running out of ammo pretty frequently, even when I'm conservative with my ammo.
So the 3D controller isn't that great with GG? Good to know, I might hold off on getting one until I really want to play my copy of Nights properly.

Neither game takes advantage of the analog. They can't tell if your just slightly pressing it or fully holding it down. When I tried to play with it I was constantly over-aiming and correcting all my shots... I bet the sega arcade joystick would probably have a decent feel with a game like GunGriffon. I've been meaning to pick one up for awhile.
But you should still get an analog for NiGHTS. Like right away. I don't really have a favorite game ever, but NiGHTS is certainly up there on my list. I have to play it at least every six months or so. It's like going back to a favorite golf course or something.

I'll definitely pick up a 3D controller soon then! I've actually been holding off from playing nights just because I want to experience the right way from the first time.
Have you played the Gundam Blue Destiny series (the games I mentioned in my top post)? They're pretty awesome, although each game seems to be about 45 minutes long. I have yet to play the 3rd, but I imagine when I do, it'll take me under an hour to complete. I'm not good at them or anything, they're just really short.
In fact, I think in order to squeeze the maximum amount of replayability from the games, they made the grading skill really harsh. The best I can get on all of the missions is a C! I'll kill all of the enemies really quickly, without taking much damage, and I'll still only get a C. Maybe if I understood Japanese I could understand whatever side objectives I might be missing out on.
