This game makes the western genre cool!

I’m a huge Western fan. That’s the main reason why I bought Gunfighter: The Legend of Jesse James and although it hasn’t scored that highly for Gamespot, much like a victim to the the infamous outlaw, I was blown away. Ok…I wont lie to you, The graphics are awful and there are only about seven different looking bad guys in the whole game in fact while gunning down yet another poncho wearing gunslinger you can’t help but mutter ‘didn’t I kill you at the saloon?’ Another problem is length. It is perhaps the shortest game I have ever played with only six very brief levels. Ubisoft have added mini games like ‘Bottle Blast’ and ‘Cowboy Carnage’ which add more depth to Gunfighter, but the novelty soon wears off.
However, Gunfighters life support is it’s coolness. For a playstation one game, it captures the wild west beautifully and immediatley reminds me of classic films from Sergio Leone’s Dollars Trilogy, to the more conventional John Wayne movies. It has eveything you would expect in a western game and levels range from the stereotypical Saloon showdown; to the gold mines of mexico and even riding the two o‘clock train to save you girl who has been tied to the tracks!
For such poor graphics, the character of Jesse James is very cool and of course he’s equipped with a convincing Clint Eastwood ‘man with no name’ voice. When he’s good, he can gun men down in seconds which you would expect from Jesse James and with quotes like ‘You boys wanna swap some lead?’ whats not to like.
Also the music is very quick paced and has a lot of influence on my overall oppinon Ubisoft certainly focused a lot of attention on the right sound.
As you probably know, it’s a lightgun compatable game which I strongly suggest you use otherwise the whole wild west feel is lost especially in the showdown level which is just screaming ‘This game loves Sergio Leone!’

In the end I strongly recommend this game to any fan of the wetern genre as I believe it captures feel of the movies more so than the playstation two games Red Dead Revolver and Gun. Overall it’s a little gem of a game…It just depends on how forgiving you are.
