GDC 2009: Guitar Hero World Tour PC Hands-On

Related Platforms:
  • PC

Full-band rocking comes to the PC courtesy of Aspyr Media.

Aspyr Media struck a bad chord with its PC port of Activision's Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock last year, a competent translation that had strangely sluggish performance even on high-spec machines. The company is hoping to right the wrongs with its PC version of Guitar Hero World Tour, promising that the issues that plagued Legends of Rock will be--like the New Romantic movement--a thing of the past.

Aspyr plans to release World Tour in North America in June this year, and will bundle the game with one wireless guitar controller. An Aspyr spokesman told us that the PC version of the game will also be compatible with PlayStation 3 peripherals, so wannabe rockers can round out the band experience by buying separate PS3 drums (and an extra guitar). Any USB microphone will work with World Tour on the PC.

In terms of music content, the entire song list from the console versions of World Tour will be available, as will the online-play options. But though the ability to create your own songs will be included in World Tour PC, the GH Tunes store--the global service that allowed PS3 and 360 owners the chance to share and download other users' songs--will not be made available. And as of publication time, there was no confirmation as to whether PC players will also be able to buy new songs online.

As for performance, the Aspyr rep told us that World Tour will ship with the same minimum specs as Legends of Rock, which for their time were quite lofty. We had a brief bash on the PC using the drums on the Foo Fighters' "Everlong" and found no sluggishness whatsoever. However, we'll have to wait until we get more playtime to see how consistently smooth the game will be. Keep it locked to GameSpot for more on Guitar Hero World Tour for the PC as it reaches its release date.

If downloadable content was available it would be hacked for sure, the downloaded songs would be in thier own format and so long as one person bought it, you could release them on a torrent for others to download and put in whatever game folder it goes to. Thats most likely the reason for not including downloadable content

If it doesn't get the downloadable songs it's a total waste.

@GpVon that would be impossible because the music stored on your computer is not in the correct format. Even if they don't add DLC, it's only a matter of time before the console's tracks are ripped so that we can just add the DLC in as customs later just like in GH3.

if the pc version does'nt have access to downloadable music, maybe they should make it so it can use the music already stored on your pc....kinda like karoake........just a thought

THANK YOU ASPYR!! Cant wait to buy this game!! I didnt want to buy a console only for this game.. so thank you to finally release it on PC! I have GH3 already and even if ppl said that it was full of issues, on my PC it runs very well.. But if WT runs better.. it will be perfect!

Now's the time to buy Activision stock, look at their lineup. They're PE is 25 and their shares are at 10 are right now,a bargain--recession is a good time to buyThey are the biggest software giant, they passed EA and are at 19 billion dollars of worth now--the Blizzard acquisition turned out to be a very wise decision for them.I'm still waiting for another WoW to be announcedTheir lineup is still amazing as it is right now though, this is just 1 release out of like 50 this year.

Man, I already have this on my PS2. I never thought the PC version would come out. I'll still try it out though, if it has downloadable content.

Custom songs? Great, more mods! Drum mods? Can't wait. I just hope we can still mod it and add custom songs, so we can put ANY song on it, WITH singing, although custom singing mods would be hard, we could add custom Slipknot songs with singing, guitar, and drums. It would be awesome to sing Spit it Out by Slipknot, so I'll get the PC one.
