Grid 2 Review

Game Emblems

The Good

  1. A disappointing racer that leaves you wondering what they were thinking.

  2. I want the first GRID that felt like actual racing with much better driving mechanics.

With a variety of driving disciplines pulled from all corners of the globe, Grid 2 is an exciting blend of arcade and simulation racing.

The Good

  • Handling strikes a great balance between arcade and simulation
  • Stellar audio and visual design
  • Broad selection of events reflect a variety of driving disciplines
  • Engrossing multiplayer.

The Bad

  • No driving assists to fine tune the difficulty
  • Occasional frame rate hitches during collisions.

The first few moments of Grid 2 should be a disaster. You're strapped into a bruising muscle car and immediately asked to negotiate the corners of downtown Chicago amid a cavalcade of roaring V8s. But rather than serving as a messy reminder of why so many driving games ease you in with something a bit more sensible, this opening race is a perfect example of what makes Grid 2 such a blast. This is a game that takes every opportunity to remove the barriers between you and the thrill of all-out street racing. With an exciting career mode and handling that strikes a great balance between arcade and simulation, it succeeds brilliantly at that task.

No matter whether you're in an Audi RS5 or an Ariel Atom, Grid 2 handles wonderfully.

Whether you're drifting through the hills of rural Japan or careening along California's Pacific Coast Highway, Grid 2 gives you the tools to perform some truly spectacular automotive feats. This is all thanks to a driving model that borrows equally from the forgiving handling of an arcade racer and the demanding physics of a driving simulator. Cars are nimble and highly responsive, but there's a very real relationship between your tires and the surface beneath them. You can give up only so much traction before a drift sends you spinning into a barricade, while accelerating too quickly out of a corner can spell disaster if you've forgotten that you're in a rear-wheel drive. There's this delicate balance between the flashy and the grounded, but it's a balance that Grid 2 pulls off extremely well.

It's only fitting that with such an empowering driving model, Grid 2 treats you as an ambassador to the sport rather than a no-name up-and-comer. You're the poster child of the newly formed World Series of Racing, an organization designed to bring together drivers from all corners of the globe. Your job is to win over these international stars and convince them to join the cause. You do this by traveling the world and competing against everything from muscle cars in Miami to hot hatches in Barcelona to luxury sedans in Dubai. You'll even find yourself driving in supercars on real-world circuits, whether it's the historic Indianapolis Motor Speedway or the relatively new Algarve Circuit in Portugal. All the while you're earning new fans to bolster the WSR, a sort of currency that propels you from one event to the next.

Grid 2 features no shortage of spectacular locations, and every one of them looks gorgeous. From the golden sunset above the construction cranes of Dubai to the glittering lights of nighttime Paris, these environments feature an exceptional attention to detail. The varied selection of cars looks just as great, no matter if they're in pristine condition at the start of the race or shedding metalwork left and right via the game's frighteningly convincing damage system. The whole presentation is simply top-notch, right on down to the immersive soundscape of roaring engines and squealing tires. The frame rate occasionally drops during vicious collisions, but for the most part, Grid 2 is a smooth and technically impressive racing experience.

There's a lot more to Grid 2 than its impressive presentation. This is a robust package with a lengthy and exciting career mode. You're constantly being introduced to new driving disciplines and event types. There are standard offerings such as elimination and time attack, as well as more specialized events such as drifting contests and touge, an automotive ballet where two cars race through narrow mountain roads and any collisions lead to an immediate disqualification.

Wows. This Shaun guy has been payed in full by CM. This game sucks compared to Race Driver Grid. No cockpit view; no derby; can't turn off driver asst; can't adjust the finite settings on controller. The car turns from the pinpoint center of the car.. It feels like driving that Atari's Hard Drivin game just add $10,000.00 in graphics. OMG!! that game had a COCKPIT VIEW!!! Can some one tell me when Hard Drivin was realest? Shame on you Codemasters. Shame on me for buying it. :(

Playing this on pc and I have to agree with the masses in that this is NO WHERE NEAR a sim at all. This is pure arcade and can NOT be a possible contender for raver of the year. It's fun for what it is, but it does tend to get a bit "blah" after awhile.

Took the racing line into the corner, braked early to get a good run out of the corner and a guy comes drifting round the side of me as punishment for trying to drive properly.

Come on, they could have given the options for turning off driving aids. Another ego swelling waste of time.

This review is poor. It omits several things that are potential deal-breakers such as the lack of cockpit-view (should I really have to find this out by searching the comments?).

It also gives the false impression that it boasts "demanding physics" that cater to the sim public. In GRID 2, drifting the curve is faster than slowing down and using the grip method. In what world is this remotely sim?

Moreover, GRID 2 is a sequel to GRID, but there is no mention of the features that have been removed. You'd be forgiven for thinking that this iteration is everything you had in GRID and more. Instead, it shunts the fans of the series trying to become the next Burnout.

Apparently Cockpit view hasn't been added, a racing game without cockpit view? jesus, kill me now!

@Cirkelinespark

CM added new tracks; made it look better; and then took all the great things that made Race Driver Grid great out of the game.

The game is super arcade. Any real race enthusiast knows this. Check the GRID2 forum...

Big game developers fool kids today making them think if it looks real its simulation. That is wrong. How the data is handled makes a simulation. A non license car in a game that handles as a real car is simulation. Games like GRID2 have real cars that don't behave like real cars = game, and not sim.

And every real simulation have cockpit since that's the point of simulation. Doing it like the real world.

No, GRID2 is a fiasco. GRID1 was fun and in between game and sim (more game), but GRID2 is pure game and very forgettable. Super short races and back to menues and that damn dude patronizing you by telling you what to do all the time. Even told me to race when the light is green...DUUUH! Talk about a game for casual gamers and no simulation as far as you can see. Crap game.

Looking forward to Project Cars. That will be way way way better than this pile of garbage.

The drifting challenges were insane on Grid. It was so much fun. I hope they have the same for Grid2.

@berserker66666 Just admit that you work for Codemasters. I've never seen more of a generic 'positive' comment in my life.

The game reminds a lot of the PGR series.  It is a good break from GT and FM without pushing the arcade elements too far.  The game has a very nice balance like PGR.  I am quite enjoying this game on the PC with the 360 controller.

From my comments anybody can understand that I am a big supporter of this very good game. As I am heading towards the end and feel very sorry that all good things come to an end,I must point out some things which at my enthusiasm when I first started to play the game i didn't recognize. A game of this caliber which it respects itself and its supporters it is unforgivable not too have ONE MODEL CAR OF THE FOLLOWING,Ferrari, Lamborghini ,Porche , Second,what's a racing game without the Ring of Germany ,Spa,Lemans, Monaco,Silverstone,and some other vary important tracks.In closing i would like to express once again to CODEMASTERS for a job well done,But none is perfect sometimes. It would have been very fun to drive a Porche PANAMERA,or a CAYENE OR AN X5 OR TUREG AROUND those open highways of the game like Hong Kong or San Francisco .

bought this last night and played it for a few hours. i have to say why are people saying this treads the line between sim and arcade? it's practically a pure sim. it's one nudge away from ridge racer.

@forbiddenmow its more sim than arcade...but there surely is some arcade in it and thats what makes it different from anything in the market

Am I the only one who sees the potential of this game. This game is not for the NOOBS, its for the professional drivers who is willing to  learn how to drive on the tracks without any assists.  Even though there are assist boards on the side of the track, there is still learning curve to the game. I am a PC owner. So if you don't have the hardware tools like I do for the feel and realism. you can forget about  purchasing this game. So stop complaining and get it,  if your up for the challenge. P.S I don't need no cockpit view.  I never use it, ever

forbiddenmow
forbiddenmow like.author.displayName 1 Like

@filemaster4 dude, this is a dumbed down arcade racer (i don't mean that in a bad way). it's suitable for noobs and absolutely not about professional drivers. it couldn't be further away from that if it tried. have you played the game?

filemaster4
filemaster4

@forbiddenmow @filemaster4

Of course I played the game I have it right in front of me.  You probably played it in super easy with your hand controller with no  steering wheel. To get the full extent of the game you will need that type of hardware.

You'd better check your word usage before you start condescending.

@IceJester45 @filemaster4

I wasn't patronizing anyone in this post. Have you checked the rest of the message-board lately. Too many of them of split between simulation and arcade driving. So going back to  my comment, if you are really into racing games that is different and you want to make a little change from  console only games like  G.T and F.M.S, get this game. It is fun and has  its innovative  challenges to. So get it for PC. P.S steering wheel is required not a gamepad, if you want that challenge.

IceJester45
IceJester45

@filemaster4 @IceJester45 If you want a challenging experience unlike anything you'd find on the console, why not just play rFactor? I haven't yet played Grid 2, but I have played the original on PC. It plays very much like a console game. I imagine the sequel is no different. I'm not saying that's a bad thing. But, if you want a sim experience -- and a good way to use your steering wheel -- I imagine there are much better options than Grid 2, especially on the PC.

So according to you, if we don't have a good PC, we can't buy this game?

filemaster4
filemaster4

@NSeiranians @filemaster4

I don't care how good your PC is. It could be in the lowest  graphics quality ever. Get a Thrustmaster or Logitech G25 or G27  steering wheel with a triple screen set up and you see what I mean. This game isn't meant for console. If you can just invest.
