Before I give you my review, here's where I'm coming from: I've only played paintball a couple of times and I enjoy first person shooters like Halo. I'm not REAL experienced in either, but, I've had fun with both. That being said, I think Greg Hastings' Tournament Paintball does a good job of bringing both worlds together. The terms, options and various aspects of the game are very accurate to real life paintball. That offers appeal to those who are familiar with the sport/hobby. Like suping up a sports car, there's a lot you can do to beef up your paintball marker. The more you accomplish, the more available to you. From a graphics standpoint, the game is ok. Nothing revolutionary or new. While I appreciate the view through the player's mask, it does make it hard to see your surroundings. But, it's realistic that way and the graphics, for the most part, are fine. The sound was kind of a non-element. It was there, but I didn't notice it. So, it didn't impress me, nor did it bother me. The sound effects were pretty realistic. A paintball makes a different kind of sound when it fires and the game replicated that pretty well. Gameplay in Greg Hastings' Tournament Paintball is very good, actually. The motions are very similar to what you might be used to in Halo or most other shooters. There is a lack of a "radar" for you to locate your enemies. While this does make it pretty frustrating because you can't see people, the truth is that there are no radars in real paintball anyway. But, that did make it a little less fun for me. One thing I thought was rather outstanding and I would like to see picked up in games like Halo is the "peak out" option. I'm not exactly sure what they called it, but the idea is that by pulling the left trigger, you can peak out from behind an obsticle. This was a very cool way to see what's going on without exposing yourself. It's a nice, realistic touch that helps a lot. The biggest drawback to the game is probably that it is too real. By that I mean that with one shot, your done. Unlike a lot of shooters where you can take 2,3 or sometimes 10 rounds before going down, paintball is simple: if you're hit, you're out. There is a "cheat" option where they ref may call a "bounce" or something so you can stay in the game, but for the most part, if you get hit, you're done. All in all, Greg Hastings' Tournament Paintball is a decent shooter and a decent paintball sim. But, I think it was the review right here on Gamespot that said something to the effect of "paintball is a simulation of real combat, therefore Greg Hastings' Tournament Paintball is a simulation of a simultation". That being said, it's fun, but nothing to write home about.
