Take the best out of Final Fantasy and throw some Devil May Cry and you get Vincent Valentine and some gun toting action, although some of the greatest things should never be mixed like brown sauce on pizza, its tastefully scary but dangerously appealing. DOC is so much like Devil May Cry to the bone, it’s almost like a kid brother to the demon shooting champ that’s gone on to be successful. Vincent Valentine is one of the best characters to come out of the Final Fantasy series, and playing as him brings out a different perspective on the FFVII world. The memorable locations in the 1997 RPG return and give this shooter some respect at least. But playing as Vince, doesn’t feel satisfying, the controls are extremely slippery, imagine trying to grip extremely slippery soap, that’s how awkward it is. You get the ability to customize the guns Vincent’s finds through the game, adding a type of power called materia which lets you cast magic as you’re shooting. Although you could easily stick to the generic handgun through out the game. There’s no real satisfaction when shooting the bad guys, especially with a dodgy targeting system and flawed control system. There’s a lot of cut-scenes to sit through which actually give a nice break from all the action, and anyone familiar with the Final Fantasy VII story will find it engrossingly enjoyable and some nice film clips that look as sharp as the FF: Advent Children film. Not being disastrous, DOC is very average in terms of gameplay, but the game is polished up in terms of presentation, the graphics look amazing, but its playability isn’t satisfying, it’s like a fancy wrapped Christmas present but inside is something really unexciting like gray socks from a boring relative. As much as I should buy anything with the Final Fantasy Logo, Its fair and totally unbiased of me to say any FF fans may feel a bit let down over DOC with around eight solid hours worth out of it. Maybe if really cheap or second hand it would be respectable to buy. With Devil May Cry around you’ll get a lot better with an action adventure and DOC feels like it’s trying so hard to be a DMC clone. Any real hardcore FF fans should take a try with it anyway, bottom line however like the controls themselves it’s a real hit or miss.
