Green Day: Rock Band Q&A
Green Day bassist Mike Dirnt talks to us about Rock Band and getting "pwned" when it comes to video games.
The influential band from Oakland, California, that spent its early years playing in Berkeley is exploring new ground with a Broadway adaption of its American Idiot album, as well a video game that will feature three of its most popular albums. Green Day: Rock Band will have the full tracklist from Dookie, American Idiot, and 21st Century Breakdown, as well select tracks from albums Warning, Nimrod, and Insomniac. The punk rock band is set to go on tour again this summer, and the game is set to come out on June 8 for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and the Nintendo Wii. We spoke with bassist and backing vocalist Mike Dirnt over the phone to find out what it is like to see a younger animated self onscreen.
GameSpot: So, how does it feel to have your own video game?
Mike Dirnt: It's pretty trippy. They approached us a long time ago, but it really never came to fruition. And it's not like we were chasing it down; they just kind of went on and did their own thing and then eventually came back. And by the time they came back, we had been obviously writing our own records and touring and everything. At that point, they had finished the Beatles video game, and it was like, "Wow, you've come a long way and look really great." I think they've proven that this is a genre that's here for a good amount of time.
GS: Can you tell us about the venues and why you decided to go with those?
MD: Well, one of them is kind of a nondescript warehouse sort of thing. It was either that or play in someone's living room, or bathroom, or garage. [The warehouse is] basically nondescript and also represents a lot of the places we played in back in the day. We also did Milton Keynes, which was our first stadium show in London, which is pretty interesting. And last but not least is the Fox Theatre in Oakland, which is near and dear to us because it's our hometown. They spent 30 years rebuilding that place and getting it up to what it is now, which is one of the most beautiful theatres, and they just reopened it in California. It's pretty cool.
GS: Were there any specific songs that had to make it into the game?
MD: I think what we wanted to do was represent at least a few full albums. One of things that we're really working on still and weren't able to do is to get some of the earlier records in there only because those were recorded on old analog tape. And analog tape becomes real brittle after a while. And to really get the stems from that…from the individual tracks…in order to put them in the game, you have to record them from analog to digital. And you get one chance to do it once the tape is really old. It's a really tedious process to not lose your entire history, so with that said, we are working on that diligently right now. But that's something we'd like to see in there as well.
GS: Most of the tracklist is pulled from three of your albums. Do you feel like your other albums have been slighted?
MD: No, I don't think so. There's something to be said about an album having a representation of that period of time. It's pretty cool. I explained earlier why we couldn't get the earlier ones. And quite honestly, for a video game, I think we skipped through a couple years where maybe later on we'll go back and we'll do like, Green Day: The Fat Years, or something. They probably weren't the most visually exciting years of our life. So who knows? The songs in and of themselves will be represented eventually. The cool thing is that you can keep adding to it.
GS: How much are you guys involved with the whole process in terms of the development of the game?
MD: That was the cool thing when they originally came to us. I think they were a lot more clueless, and we were completely clueless. Years have gone by, and their technology and their ability to get their heads wrapped around where they want to be have moved forward quite a bit. We've gone from completely clueless to only slightly clueless. We just knew that we wanted to represent different venues. We were like, "Look, you got to come out and see some of the live shows and watch some of these live concerts that we've played and documented so that you get an idea of what the energy of our shows are."
GS: What is it like to see yourself animated onscreen?
MD: It's pretty cool. I think they made us look a little younger than we are now. So, yeah, I'm not used to being an avatar. That's for sure.
@ouseboy Yeah they played a town. A whole town.
GREEN DAY FTW
u mettalica lover f!@#up
METALLICA
Green Day Rock Band?? Really? I don't see how a bunch of quarter note power chords would make for a fun game.
@BMXnick76 - Yeah, I have to say, their older stuff was better than their new stuff. I don't care for the whole "political" theme :(. Same with Linkin Park. I do like Rise Against though, but that's where they started out, it's not like they completely changed or anything like most bands are doing nowadays.
@SocialAnXieTy - What's wrong with Nirvana? :( I want to be in a video game... XD! Seriously though, SocialAnXieTy has a point. It is a little surprising that they went to Green Day and not a more famous band (not that Green Day isn't famous, but there are more well known bands). You would think someone like Iron Maiden or Ozzy would get a game first. It's pretty cool Green Day has a game though. Congrats!
No Gilman venue? I guess this game just isn't for true old school fans then. I wish they had more off of Insomniac, that record was just as good as Dookie IMO.
I know it's been said time and time again, but I honestly don't understand how they went from a great band like The Beatles to Green Day. It's like they made TB:RB just so that when this game for a terribly mediocre band drops, people will be like "Oh well, at least they blessed us with The Beatles: Rock Band.. this is forgivable." I really hope this doesn't sell well or we'll be seeing My Chemical Romance and Nirvana getting their own games. Oh God...
i would kill for a Fugazi rock band but that would never happen...
"We also did Milton Keynes, which was our first stadium show in London." Milton Keynes is it's own town, a good hour away from London. Just sayin...
Gosh I so getting this game.
every happy with how this game looks but whyd they sleep on the insomniac stuff? 86 and panic song on bass and drums? cmon that woulve been sick...and im holding out hope for kerplunk material...
Great band for the game!! obviously some of you are too young to remember Dookie and Insomniac, both great albums. cannot wait!! GD FTW! and the haters that want games like RBMuse, goodluck. I think they may stick to bands that have been popular for atleast a decade. And if you think they make too many music games, its probably because you never got into them.
hm111 Sex Pistols rape the Ramones
I was dissapointed how they left some of my favourite songs out of Beatle Rock Band and now it seems like there not gonna release any more dlc.
I hope Harmonix knows too be careful and not turn into Milkvision.
I would of the perfered the time to be spent on more Beatles DLC even so i had fun playing drums on the demo of Green Day Rock Band, not buying though.
why green day?... ugh... dookie was good... american itdiot was alright.. but their latest is just... fuk greenday, where's my Muse DLC or Rockband/GH Muse?!
[This message was deleted at the request of the original poster]
hman1111, I Agree. But we cant ask that to this kind of market, but green day aint that bad..Dookie is one of my very favourites albums of all times. (I kwow my english sucks, try answer me is spanish). Go Argentina on the world cup! go green day to !
i will not get this i hate punk rock, it makes the generation i grew up with (Aerosmith, AC/DC, Styx) look like **** (im 17, i thank my parents for having me listen to this while in the car)
Forget these sellout f@gs I want a Ramones Rock Band!
I played the demo.... only like some of their songs, one is on the demo... I'll let you guys decide which one. And I WILL NOT BE GETTING THIS GAME STOOPID IDEA AND WILL BE GETTING RB3 WITH THE KEYBOARD!!! :D
How about a Dethklok Rock Band? Now thats something I would spend 200 bucks on.
Greenday, The living definition of Sell Outs.
Green Day? Isn't that the band that made millions using the free market, but tells people to hate capitalism? No thanks, fake punk band.
@ lbptoady Are you serious, I barely know any kids that like beatles, its like 4 people i know. But these rock games barely get picked up anyway because kids nowadays listen to R 'n' B and hip hop and are too ignorant to try something different. I will buy this game on day of release hopefully!
I don't like Green Day and will not be picking up this game. One reason is because I don't like their music. Another reason is because the bands they choose for Rock Band or Guitar Hero need to be bands that have a major history together and have had major success. This game will not be as big a hit as Beatles Rock Band because only some kids like Green Day. Everyone likes The Beatles though.
I will get this only when it comes down in price.
i'm not a fan of green day though i do admitt that they have some great songs from album american idiot but to make a video game off of them!! i'm not so sure about that..they should cancel the game coz it's gonna faiiiiiiiil or at least make a downloadable content or something..
I love Tre Cool's drumming so there!
I can't believe their still making these games. It's beginning to look like nintendo's shovelware
@McCabe24TML How many bands are in the same league as the Beatles? That's what I thought. @ everyoneelse : Also, try drumming this game on expert mode, I play drums in real life, if you're not used to it your arms may fall off. Tre's a good drummer, that will be the most fun of the game. The guitar should be mostly simple while the bass should be a bit better. Mike's the only bassist I know who routinely turns a standard chugging rock bassline into something funky. I'm not sure how he does it, but he does it.
To me, Green Day just doens't hold up to bands like Aerosmith, Metallica, The Beatles, and even Van Halen and therefore doesn't deserve to have a game completely based off of them. Don't get me wrong, I like Green Day but who are we kidding, they're definetely not up in the same league as The Beatles.
If they were to release a Linkin park rock band, they would have to create a new sampler bundle...very little guitar there, at least with green day there is drum challenge and boozer, what Punk Rock band is not simple?
Hard to believe they are still making Rock Band games, and people are still buying them. Nothing against Green Day, but this game doesn't sound like it will be very successful. I know they have a large mainstream fanbase, but I'm thinking people are getting tired of playing plastic instruments, like I am... but then again The Beatles Rock Band sold quite a bit... so ehh...
... Green Day? Psssssssh!
A punk band, especially one so simple and with so little variation in their songs should not get their own game. Of course the obvious reason they are getting it is because of their massive success which as unfortunate as it is it is the truth. Guitar hero made two good choices with Aerosmith and Metallica. Beatles Rock Band was a good idea. I just can't see the appeal with Green Day...i hate them for the record
Where are you Linkin Park?
Green day was a mistake
@grasshopper6 That's what she said!
Idk its something differant to me sounds good
I hate Green Day.
A fail - I smell it.
"We also did Milton Keynes, which was our first stadium show in London." Don't get me wrong I like Green Day, but Milton Keynes and London are 2 completely different places.
Why does Green Day have their own Rock Band game? Their songs are good, but they're relatively easy enough to learn the actual song on guitar in the time it takes for someone to master the expert difficulty.
@345tom I think you missed my point. This is not enough for a full game. It should be a content download. I think the industry is sticking to old business practices and need to let go of the pump out a new addition every year, and stick with the one they have, just make it robust with content.
just compare Bruta Legends album with all Gutar Hero n' Rock Bands.....
I really got Metallica... I even got the Beetles (though I think thats more of a Singstar title then a Rock Band title), but Green Day, really? Pretty pathetic.
