Grand Theft Auto gives it the Miami Vice look...

User Rating: 7.9 | Grand Theft Auto: Vice City PS2
Since Grand Theft Auto III, alot of expectation has been made of the series. In this latest incarnation, Vice City, you are given a whole new character/persona and this time your in "Miami" Vice City. That's right. You have your Hawaian shirt, your gat, the mob you deal with and your unique open-ended missions. Vice City is probably the hardest of the bunch even when compared to GTA:SA but Vice City (VC) has its own style. VC is nothing new from GTA III except for a few wrinkles. These new wrinkles come in the form of graphics slightly better than GTA3. The animation is still clunky but at least you can do thing like go to the club and pick up chicks which is a quirky novelty. VC has some pretty unique missions and the story is pretty good. The voiceovers are done much in the same way GTA3 has executed but the graphics are just horrid. Characters have no detail and the city just looks large instead of detailed. Most of game engine's impressive feats really don't get any love until you actually fly a helicopter around town. The really nice thing about VC is its loading times...if any. Other things of note are the new cars, new areas to visit and the music. 80's is the theme here and it works best with the current setting. As for the the many little freestyle tidbits you can do in the game, don't highten your expectations too much. If you have played GTA before, you should already be used to the various ways you can wreck havoc in your city. Whether its shooting the police, civilians, and other innocent bystanders, VC has its fair share of it and adds a couple of new ways to create violence or pick up ladies. The missions are much more lengthy and can be annoying if you die in the most stupidest ways. Some frustration can arise for new GTA players. The characters you interact with in the game are decent but don't expect performances that compare to Scarface. It's almost hard to get into since the graphics are just too crappy to justify watching them. I would've been cool just seeing stylized portraits of the characters similar to the box cover and just have some subtitles or voiceover. That would've been more compelling to me. I understand that the game tries to keep the player in the mood by integrating its game engine with the characters but it's just butt-ugly. I almost feel like I'm playing the old PC game Interstate 76. Nevertheless, VC is a pretty good game when compared to its predecessor. You can do more side missions depending on what vehicle you jack (i.e. Pizza delivery). VC also has the property management feature where you end up buying real-estate. In the beginning it seems intuitive but ends up becoming a micro-management nightmare when collecting dues from all your zillions of properties. It also seems like the police love shooting your tires too...alot...so expect doing the same thing to your enemies too. Overall, VC is a decent game but it is nothing that hasn't been seen before. There are other open-ended games out there so don't expect GTA:VC as something revolutionary or evolutionary as what some reviewers say here. radcastro.com
