i dont understand how this got a perfect score. It is easily the most boring GTA ever made. Its all drive and shoot missions, over and over and over again. Not only did many people think the same thing, but rockstar adressed this issue and are trying to fix this problem for number 5, but offering verying missions and playing multiple characters. instead of racing rc cars and fun shit in san adreas, you get to....go drinking, pay for a strip dance, blah blah blah. grpahically its amazing, but other than that, i gave up playing it after the second day and moved on to something without mind numbing repetition.
Easily one of the top 3 games released in the past decade. Its only rivals are Dark Souls and Demon Souls. I have put over 200 hours into GTA4 over the past four years and still find myself playing it frequently. The game world is absolutely phenomenal. The story is top notch in the main game as well as in TLAD and TBoGT.
I love the realism this game offers that previous iterations in the series lacked. Cars in previous games felt like they were bolted to the ground. There are minor problems, but everything about this game screams perfection. The attention to detail is stunning. It is plain to see that every building and street corner was crafted from the ground up. There are literally hundreds of different pedestrian models. You'll never see the same two pedestrians standing on a sidewalk. It's clear that a lot of work went into designing Liberty City.
This game is simply a masterpiece and totally deserving of a 10/10. There's a reason that it got a perfect score from nearly every videogame publication in existance, including Gamespot, IGN and GameInformer.
2 Like Wait, so if it isn't a perfect game and has problems as you mentioned at the end of the review, why does this have a perfect 10 score? I'm not one to moan about review scores, but the score itself and what you say is slightly contradicting...
I enjoyed a lot more previous Grand Theft Auto games, although the city in this game actually felt alive, there are so many inconsistencies and the game is way too short compared to San Andreas, it's not funny as it used to be. I had a better time playing old Grand Theft Auto games from the PS2 era, and also PC requirements are insanely high, however I still managed to play it with plenty of bugs on my PC.

I am sitting down thinking what game i should play on this rainy day so i thought i would watch a few reviews of games i have to get in the mood. After a few i have hit a dead end....GTA. What happened? Wheres the fun? I have tried to play through a second time but it can never hold me for more than a couple hours. I want san andreas style story with jet packs, hill billys, country side, desert and mountains to cycle off ect with xbox 360 graphics.......gta V will be this game i am sure of it! Cant wait! Untill then i think i will pass on gta iv and stick crisis 1 on instead.
PC version is a HORRIBLE adaptation, you need an absurd hardware quality. There's nothing about GTA V coming out on PC, Rockstar hates Microsoft and I don´t blame them.
1 Like Ive tried to like this game, only to buy it, then sell it on, twice. I hate the controls, Why does Nico move like he's wading through treacle? and the car handling killed it off for me. If i wanted simulation car handling i'd play Gran Turismo.
1 Like This game could be great if the controls weren't utterly broken. I get that I am getting to this game 4 years after release but with a score of 10 I still expected it to be pretty damn enjoyable. It's not. I played about 20 hours waiting for it to get good before doing a bit of research and realizing that this was as good as it got, which was fucking terrible. It is the most tedious, overrated piece of garbage I have every played.
@Slade968 i can relate to what you are saying the controls are broken i bought the the game a few weeks ago was never a huge fan of GTA but my friend told me i should play and finish the game even through the very annoying parts and trust me its true. this game was never a 10 but after around 50%-40% is finished the game gets much better and mission get done much faster. here are some tips that helped me get by the broken controls:
1) get friendly with dwayne since if you do you can call him for back up (just make sure to answer his email or he dosnt answer your calls.
2) make sure to use spry & pay to lose the cop and always wear body armor.
3) if you are playing on XBOX 360 or playstation turn off the aim assist (the most broken thing in the game).
hope this helps, i almost gave up on this game too but im glad i didnt the story gets much better later own.

@baumeden @Slade968 I've been thinking of getting the GTA 5 next year. Last time I played GTA was on the ps2 (San Andreas). Enjoyed it somehow, but find it repetitive back then. I usually get busted. Anyway, I had no idea GSPOT gave this a perfect 10? WTF? It might have been the hype back then, just like how they score AC and ACII. Somehow when you play the game 3 or 4 years later, you wouldn't consider that the game was rated that way. If the game is new and you're a fan, the score can be one sided. Once it gets old and you bought the game at a huge discount 4 years after, the feeling is no longer the same. Your standard or perception of judging games should be better than what current games have. If you're going to ask me if it's correct to gave a game 10, I'll say no. I'm a fan of MGS and MGS4: Guns of the patriots got also a rating of 10. But I won't give a game a 10 unless it's perfect in every sense of the word. No game could be 10. Everyone have different taste, likes and types of games.
@elmerfud43 Get them both! These two are very good,but very different games. I have enjoyed both of them, but impression from each of them were different.
ok im pretty sure 10 doesnt mean oerfect, i mean game informers 10 means almost perfect, no game can be perfect ever, its all opinion based, no game would ever get a 10 and there would be no point of even having a 10, does it deserve a 10 just about in that area really great game for its time
@nitromuffin The 10 score just means at the time this game defined the genre perfectly. You cant compare games across genres. At the time the game was so good. That's why even on metacritic it got a 9.8 overall rating (consoles) if that's not being the best in a genre then i don't know what is.

This game is absolutely amazing, I get a lot of play time out of it still and have ever since it came out.. The only major problem I have with it is that you're forced to waste a lot of time doing the same old shit with your NPC friends, or they tend to stop liking you as much very quickly.
The stuff you do with them (i.e. drinking, bowling, playing pool, etc.) is all done fairly well and it's fun, but when you're playing your 100th game of pool it gets a bit fucking annoying that you have to do these things instead of focus more on the missions you need to seek out and complete. They should have made it so you can have a lot more time in between outings with each friend, because it gets so stale so fast.
Also, I'll pretty often finish doing something with one of the characters and think okay now I'll go do one of the missions. On my way to one, I'll get another fucking phone call from another friend asking me if I want to go bowling, eating, or whatever and you can't really say no because then they get kinda pissed at you.
If this problem were fixed, I would give the game a 10 but for me it's annoying enough that it forces me to give the game a 8 or 9. Doing these activities now and then is fun, but the game really just shoves it down your throat too much and it feels more like playing The Sims except with guns and hookers at times.
Best GTA game, but i'd hardly give it a 10 out of 10 when you end it feeling they could've done a few more things better (ex.: more clothes, hats, sunglasses, whatever). Out of the 2 games with a 10 rating i think MGS4 indeed deserves it, GTA4 i'd personally give a 9,0/9,5 top.
@No_Named_Fan Sorry,but don't you think that it's pretty stupid to compare two,such different games...? Both of them are great.
I need to buy this at some point, GTA seems to be a series that I really should play more often. I love free-roaming games where you can do whatever the hell you want, just to have fun and be a badass! \m/

2 Like you have to realize at the Time of Release, it was the ONLY game of its kind!...That being said, i would have gave it 9.5 not a perfect 10. Only Metal Gear Solid 4 deserves that rank!

@gameme199 Nice try (*sarcasm*). If you meant that it's as great as it was hyped out to be, then I can't say that I agree with you. Too much emphasis on realism over fun was found in GTA IV, which turned me off a great deal. Regardless, I'll still somehow finish the rest of it (minus the achievements) just to see everything that it offers.
