GTA IV - It's all about atmoshpere

User Rating: 9 | Grand Theft Auto IV X360

As San Andreas was the very peak of how you could balance total foolishness and an interesting gangster story number four leans a lot more to the story side of the GTA universe.

The atmosphere of Liberty City and the surprisingly captivating story of Niko Bellic makes this in my opinion the strongest title of the series (yes, even GTA V). I'm reviewing it now 7 years after it's original release and I am pretty surprised that it took me this long to even try this game. So what does time mean for this game? Sure the controls are clunky, if you die in a mission you'll have to do everything again, even the transport route to the mission and you've also lost your armor, ammo and health from the missions failure. It's frustrating but everything else compensates. How your relations with other characters develop and feels fluent, the cellphone, the internet cafes, the dates and that you after a while just whistle after a taxi and sit back and enjoy one of the many brilliantly produced radio stations. One of the absolutely best open world games created and it's all about the atmosphere. This game has details, sounds and a city that pulsates and create an illusion of that everyone in it lives their own life. Something that is completely lost in similiar more recent titles like Watch Dogs where none of this could be found. If you've never played GTA IV and are a fan of open world gangster games this is a must play.
