Get updated details on GTAIV's weapons and combat here.
Grand Theft Auto IV is the game everyone wants. You know it, we know it, and developer Rockstar Games knows it. And now that the highly anticipated action adventure game is nearing its release, we've sat down with Rockstar North associate producer Imran Sarwar to get new details on the game's weapon and cover system, and the various improvements that have been made to combat. Enjoy these new details and screenshots and gear up for the game's release at GameSpot's Grand Theft Auto IV launch center.
GameSpot: How many different weapons are there in the GTAIV?
Imran Sarwar: There are 15 weapons in total, and you can now pick up objects from the street, such as bricks, and throw them. There's a good amount included for all situations and playing styles.
GS: Which is your favorite and why?
IS: Due to the amount of carnage, havoc, and sheer destruction you can cause--it has to be the RPG. It has been made a lot more realistic. The rockets can deviate from their path if they skip off the ground or other objects. Firing a rocket at a car and seeing the smoke trail with a spectacular explosion is very cool. And when an LCPD chopper has you cornered, seeing the rotors come off, the tail snap off, and the [chopper itself] fall to the ground in a massive explosion is pretty cool too--with the particle effects, it's all really cinematic. The shotguns deserve a mention too--the damage they do at close range is really satisfying.
GS: We understand that there are not going to be any ammunition stores--what prompted this decision? How will you be able to buy weapons this time?
IS: With GTAIV, we were trying to make our own semirealistic version of New York and it didn't feel right having those big gun supermarkets in the city. In this game, there are underground gun shops around the city, but you initially need to be shown where they are. You can also buy guns out of the car of your friend, Little Jacob. If you maintain your friendship with him, he'll help you out by meeting you around the city and making his arsenal of weaponry available, at a discounted price of course--you can call him any time of the day while on or off missions.
GS: For the RPG, particularly the way the trajectory spirals, how do you code for such seemingly random movement?
IS: The RPG projectiles are initially fired in a straight line, but they can ricochet and deviate from glancing collisions. The spiraling of the smoke trail is done in the visual effects system. We have a lot of power and flexibility in controlling the position and behavior of all particles, so we can give the trail a nice curling behavior while also adding gravity and in-game wind forces to each particle.
GS: What changes have been made to the on-foot targeting system for GTAIV?
IS: The targeting system has been given an overhaul and we are pretty confident it will cater to every style of gamer. You can now lock on, and while locked on, target any part of the body by moving the reticle. Using the full range of the lock-on button really gives players the flexibility of using both to free-aim and lock on at any point, so whether you want to frantically lock on and shoot an enemy who is bearing down on you with a shotgun, or carefully free aim and shoot the petrol tank of a car, it's all done easily through the same system. We've also put in a "perfect shot" system--by squeezing the trigger button slightly when you first lock on to a target you can watch the targeting reticle tighten up and your first shot will be more accurate. Brilliant for one-shot takedowns. If you don't want to use the locking system, you can solely use free aim as well. Unlike previous GTAs, you can use the targeting system to throw grenades and Molotov [cocktails] and make sure they reach their targets (providing they're in reach). The euphoria technology really brings the new targeting system to life.
You have to effing joking me, right? The most BS game to ever come out on console is now curropted the HDD on PCs? Pure BS. GTA is going to burn in hell, and I am going to enjoy watching it.
Sounds a lot like the Gravity Gun? I think it sounds more like having hands, you know the appendages to your left and right? People throw things with them, i think this started before Halflife 2.
Pick up stuff and throw it? For those of you have played Half-Life 2, that sounds a lot like the Gravity Gun.
Whats all this about the RPGs? Ive yet to see an RPG that actually deviates like they do in real life....and the particle effects??? Each RPG smoke trail looks exactly the same. Also, they cant even ricochet off of glancing surfaces so almost everything they said was wrong :(
You people who don't have GTAIV should have foreseen this. If you can't find a copy it's your own fault. GTA3, Vice City, San Andreas; all of which were hard to get after release day if you didn't reserve a copy. Why you may ask? BECAUSE IT'S GTA!
:( it looks brill and al the way down my 360 freinds list it just says GTAIV but i dont have it ive been trying everywehre and there all sold out i think im going to die of boardom :(
I bought it yesterday and played it a little before I fell asleep. This game is gonna be SWEET!!!!! The depth of this game is hella good. If you guys wanna add me my PSN username is Scubei. thanks for playing.........
The game's great, playing it, love it. But the 10/10 is total bull. There's still lots of problems in this game, it doesn't deserve 10/10. I kind of lost my last shred of respect for Gamespot right about now. I'm gonna go check out what Jeff Gerstmann thinks about the game.
How come all the vehicles in the game handle like garbage?(sans the motorcycles) Also, why does it feel like you are controlling a unicycle when you are walking around as Niko? Other than that, it is a good game. I'm still looking forward to Saints Row 2 more though.
This is a wicked game!!! I wish all the fanboys would get lost; the ps3 is newer and therefore better performance, the 360 beat the ass off the ps2, the replacement to the 360 will make the ps3 look tame... IT'S CALLED PROGRESS. If you don't understand go and ask your science teacher or your mum.
i have been waiting for this game for 2.5 years ! and i didn't buy Forza and turok just because i was a big fan of GTA , by the way , this game is awesome !
OMG this game was so worth the wait.... well if u asked me a few months ago i prob wouldn?t of said that.. But hey it's the best gta I?ve ever played in my opinion. I have a 360 n my mate has a ps3 n they both look superb so stop with this 360 over ps3 vice versa crap! GOD THANK U FOR SENDING US ROCKSTAR! TO FOR FILL OUR VIOLENT WAYS!! AMEN.
10/10 wow thats huge for them to give a 10 out of 10 there ether been paid off or they trully think the gamr genuinely is that good & very well could be from what i have seen............... about fanboys guess were going to get em anyways & i own ps3 & i hate both them, lol ps3 fanboys & xbox fanboys, sh8 buy what you want i say & screw everyone else opion its what you want & there ramblings ant going to change anything like a bunch of politions,
look out Saints Row metal gear and gear of war GTAIV got a big 10 on all the Review and magazines possibly the game of year
Ok big problems have already surfaced on Both consoles in single player, From slow texture load in and pop ups to failure to read disk entirely. The World Blur will also give you a headache within 20mins,leaving you feeling ill and a little disorientated after u turn off your console.(obviously implemented for framerate) I have Gta4 on both PS3 and 360 and both have these issues. Don't get me wrong ,gameplay is excellent however,.. Pretty disappointed these issues weren't addressed before release. p.s. both consoles were tested on a variety HDTV's by myself with no improvement in tearing or blur. Pressure from the gaming community should see Rockstar addresses these issues with a patch to hopefully improve our gaming time in the GTA world. Finger's Crossed. For more info hit up the GTA4 forums. Good Gaming
Don't blame gamespot for the pS3 having crap exclusive games, blame sony who made hardware with no dev kits for developers to make games on, Blame sony for giving it a measly 256mg ram, but at least you get a blu ray player. Every exclusive on PS3 is average to lame. Gamespot are quite fair and you fanboys get annoyed when all your hype turns out to be pure BS, remember Heavenly Sword and how amazing it was ment to be, remember Lair and its 6 axis , remember R&C with its retarded difficulty setting, DON'T BLAME GAMESPOT FOR BEING HONEST BLAME SONY FOR SUCKING.
@Drushi77, If you read the reviews of Uncharted and R&C you will see most sites and mags were amazed by the graphics and physics, but it was for other reasons they didn't receive a 10. And the Graphics were never the selling point of a GTA game. But it's nice to see that you beat the game and can tell us about all the missions moron.
I have not been this amped for a game ever. About five hours I should be playing it. I took the whole week off too :D . I agree with narjion STFU about ps3 vs 360. Celebrate this game.
Question: If GTAIV had been a PS3 exclusive, what score do you think Gamespot would give it? My guess is an 8.5. They would point out how the graphics aren't exactly next gen and some missions were repetative. However, as it stands, they will give it a 10 like everyone else bc its on the 360 as well. Anyone else wanna guess? Remember, they gave R&C a 7.5 and Uncharted an 8.0 when every other gamesite not on the MS payroll gave them 9.0 's (see metacritic).
@Paul2005 OMG we got a Sony fanboy talking rubbish again, Haze is crap, don't compare that garbage to GT4, this is why i hate fanboys so much, he comes to a 360 forum to spout out rubbish that a PS3 exclusive will be better than the finest franchise in video game history, shows how deluded and foolish these fanboys are, its embarrassing, and desperate, did you regret getting your ps3 that much that you need to talk rubbish online in a vain effort to convince yourself that you never wasted your money?
to close!!!! 1 year waiting. Itīs just one more day!!! AND ITS IMPOSSIBLE TO WAIT do you now why, 29th Apr? because, 1 year ago, rockstar show the first trailer, and they thought it will be good, waiting 1 year for the biggest game of the world and make more changes. Now its ready!!!!! =D=D=D=D
