its actually possible to survive. multiplayer + helicopter pilot + you bailing out over manhattan = possible chance of surviving. if you hit a pole or tree, you might not die, and it will slow you down before you hit the ground. of course when i myself hit a street light, i spun around faster and splatted harder. depends on the angle you hit it. my friend hit a tree though and survived. we both had jumped out of the same helicopter flying at the same height as the empire state building.

I survived when i bailed out of my heli, then again i landed in the water and got run over by a police boat so.....

i know the no base jumping sucks...it was awesome in SA to grab a plane or chopper and just sky dive in on your objective and land on a nearby rooftop or tower and snipe out the thugs...
