As I sat down to write a review of this game, I found my old review of the 2006 game. I could save myself some time reposting that review on this page, cleverly switching the 06 to 08, and be done with it. I won't though. Instead, I'll rehash my old gripes: shooting is retarded (presumably to make scoring "difficult"), dribbling is pointless (unless you're the computer, in which case, Hyppia suddenly develops C. Ronaldo-like handles), and passing is a moot point thanks to your teammates brainless AI (and in updated futility, the command to send players on runs seems much less likely to produce any sort of build-up than before). New frustrations include recycled commentary that is now far more likely to be inaccurate than it ever was before (including a penchant for giving the keeper credit for saves he never touched), the idiotic manual cross/through control which proves far too sensitive on the right analog for game use, increasing snobbishness on the transfer front, inconsistent simulation of real teams in managerial mode (according to FIFA08, neither Man U, Liverpool, nor Chelsea will finish in the top 4 of the EPL... Everton and MIDDLESBOROUGH however had great seasons; my Cottagers faired well at my hands, of course), and the same subpar graphics boasted in the 2005 version of the game. All in all, FIFA08 is a still-lousy, still-addictive installment in a serial that has victimized football fans for a decade now. It is both insulting and enthralling and until PES can boast the franchise licenses of FIFA, it will dominate the market (and my attention). The only real difference in this game its predecessors is the names of the players on the teams.
