PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE try this game with community patch 1.71. - and kiss your social life good-bye.

At long last we've got a patch that's working. The latest (and final) community patch is 1.71 (or 1.72 which is just a combination of 1.70 and 1.71). It's a whopping 880mb and make the game playable at last. The graphics looks much better. The ridiculous foliage movement has been tuned. Many hi-res textures have been re-done, immersive wildlife sounds have been added and so forth. When the game was launched I couldn't properly run it with my Vista 32 6600quad core 8800GT 512 and 4GB ram. Now I run everything maxed out at 1900x1200 and it just runs smooth (bar the occasional stutter when you enter new areas).

The combat and AI are still not great, but who cares if you have such a massive non-linear world to explore? The landscape is beautifully hand-crafted (unlike computer-generated Oblivion) and feels real. The quests make sense, the music is great as is known for this series.

Bad points are: still system hog, poor animation, bad voice acting, bad combat. However, for me they are far outweighed by the good points. Now, bring on RISEN.
