A rebirth of the legend, loaded with action, stealth & respect to the classic.

Reimaging or rebirth. Two words that would best describe this game then the new favored word: remake. GoldenEye for Wii is based on the Nintendo 64 classic that revolutionized shooters though title and appearance is only skin deep. A new combatant for best 2010 shooter has arrived and Bond or no Bond, cross platform or exclusive this title deserves the moment plus the attention of every gamer.

The plot of the original source material still stands, taken from the movie Bond scrutinizes a mysterious military helicopter packed with deadly weapons, a Russian satellite weapon base explosion and the anonymous Janus figure. The story is brought up to date to match the newer Bond films, with the film's star Daniel Craig reprising as Bond along with Judi Dench as M, the entire supporting cast has been redesigned to distant itself from the movie, Devices such as the helicopter which wasn't flushed out much in terms of story in the original game now plays a larger role while fresh dialogue meets the movie script's classic lines to strengthen the story.

Game play is enriched to match the story. Bond must shoot the bad guys as always, making use "aiming down the sights" play, as seen in the Call of Duty series. A smart phone plus a few apps replaces the wristwatch to help unlock doors, hack gun turrets or shut off alarms, a handy device to even the score. Weapons taken from the N64 version now appear updated & realistic and the A.I. knows how to use them in the masses. Early objectives in the game are a hefty distance apart with two dozen enemy soldiers ducking, shooting and running along the way so playing the offensive will play out natural, giving appreciation to level design & keeping the old with the new. The small quick time events between mission objectives prove graphics don't always prevail upon game play. All levels appear from the original game, accomplice by multiplayer, a strong part of the original, is back & now online, always a fun experience but could've been better with some microphone support, leaving teams somewhat in the dark.

Graphics look good for the standard definition; sound is great with voice acting replacing the text of the past, Craig still gives his straight forward Bond performance. Controls are a large part of the product due to support of a few styles including the Remote, Classic, GameCube and zapper. Each control scheme adds positives & negatives to the action, adding to replay value or undertaking a new difficulty setting. People with shaky hands should try placing the remote on their legs or arm rest due to the strong sensitivity of the sensor.

For the Classic Edition, the buyer will receive a limited edition gold classic controller. The controller looks great; the feel in a player's hands will remind some of the Nintendo 64 controller. Upon using this as a way to play the game, many will be drawn back to the style of the original. The bundle is a much better purchase as the controller can be used anywhere, just plug it in to the Wii Remote and set that nearby, keeping in sync the entire time plus being a secondary controller for some Wii games and Virtual Console games makes it a deluxe edition worth the extra money.

Taking apart a beloved classic was risk that paid off and will continue to pay up. GoldenEye is reborn for a new generation, bringing along everything that made it great, updating it for new and old players. For new players, memories will be made, for veterans, nostalgia waits.

Last Words: A+, what every shooter and/or movie patterned game should inspire to be.
